Bio

I have taught in Elementary, Middle and High School. I believe in "hands-on" learning. Learning should be fun, interesting and rewarding. Students learn when a teacher is enthusiastic about a subject and knowledgeable. I work from the student's needs and build on the subject in slow, steady increments.
I enjoy working with all kinds of students. I have worked in Gifted Education as well as Special Education.

I enjoy working with all kinds of students. I have worked in Gifted Education as well as Special Education.

Every child is special. Students can have learning styles and preferences. Some students like visual clues, some like auditory learning and some learn best with "hands-on" or tactile learning. Knowing how this particular student learns is an important clue to success in the tutoring process.

I am a certified Space Science for Schools teacher. Space Science is a personal interest. For four years I ran the Star Lab program at my school.

My degree is in English Literature. I am a poet and writer as well. I have taught Writing Traits in 5th grade and Creative Writing.

I worked as a instructor in a Computer Adult Training school. I taught several of the Microsoft Office products including WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT.

When students are not receiving good grades they often feel defeated. I work to overcome the "I can't" and bring it to the "I Can". Learning where the misunderstandings are and then encouraging students always brings success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught in the Elementary grades most of my teaching career. As a Montessori teacher, I worked with students Ages 3-6 and 6-9. I taught in public elementary subjects 5th grade Math, 5th Grade Writing, 5th Grade and Middle School English and 4th grade Social Studies. As a Gifted Education teacher, I taught grades 2-6 in Science and Technology. As a Space Science teacher, before I retired one year ago, I taught students from Pre-K through 5th grade. In my Higher Order Thinking Skills class I taught grades 2-5. I know both the development, behavioral and learning differences of these age groups. I know how to adapt lessons to these variations. I am particularly good at teaching young students to read and understand math concepts due to my Montessori manipulative training.

I am a write on the board teacher. My own handwriting needs to be clear for students to understand instructions and notes. I have been told I have a good handwriting. I went to school when handwriting practice was required. I have also helped students improve their handwriting. I am familiar with special pencils and other tools to help students who need fine motor skill assistance. I also know practices to improve "hand/eye" coordination. Despite the use of computers, I am a supporter of a legible handwriting. It is a brain activity helpful to students.

My daughter used Home/Hospital tutoring for her 2nd grade. I worked with this teacher and discussed how she developed curriculum customized to each students needs and medical condition. I presented a Space Science course to a group of HomeSchool parents and students. I have several friends who Home-School their children and know how they organize their time and curriculum. I am good at assessing a student's strengths and need for improvement skills. I also use a Multiple Intelligences and Learning Style evaluation to be sure a student's needs are met. Patient and understanding

Sylvia has impressed me and exceeded my expectations. I have never hired a tutor before and wasn’t sure what to expect. She is not only very patient and kind to my daughter )who is struggling in language arts) but she is also understanding of her learning needs and teaches in a way that is easier for her to understand. My daughter went into this with very little confidence due to her inability to understand and complete her work in school. She now is happier and more confident in her work. Her grades are improving and I can’t thank Sylvia enough for everything she’s done for her in just a few lessons. We’re beyond grateful for her and it’s wonderful as a mother to see that my daughter is excited to start her tutoring lessons. She’s showing that she genuinely loves to learn when the material is taught in a way that she can understand and enjoy.

Wonderful tutor

Sylvia is working with my 6 year old on reading comprehension. She isn’t the first tutor we have used but she is the first he truly looks forward to seeing each week (online). Sylvia took time to connect with my son on his interests and sprinkles them into their lessons. Sylvia always has strategies for how to grow his skills and the energy and joy to make it all so fun.

Sylvia is a wonderful tutor!

I would just like to take the time to say what a wonderful tutor Sylvia was. This was my third attempt at trying to pass my thesis course for my masters. With her help I was able to achieve this goal and I will be receiving my Masters degree this weekend. She is patient with her students and takes the time assessing their weakness so that she may be better able to help them.

Sylvia C. is helping my nonnative English speaking wife to pass the GED.

Sylvia C. is helping my nonnative English speaking wife to pass the GED. Sylvia breaks everything down to be easily understood. She gave my wife the confidence she needed to study for her GED assignments. My wife is very motivated and after each of her lessons she continues studying on her own and works at home with her GED workbook stress free. Sylvia gives my wife the self-assurance to do well one step at a time. I expect my wife to be able to keep up with her GED lessons and be able to pass the GED tests one at a time as a consequence. She always gives my wife very good suggestions on how to study and that help her to be motivated him to do more in the GED workbook in between lesions on her own. Sylvia is a Great Tutor. She is one of the best tutors because she always explained everything clearly and helped my wife to understand each topic. Moreover, she is very flexible when my wife had to ask her to move our schedule due to my work. Sylvia has been working with my wife to study for the GED and to get her English to be more fluent. She is always so attentive, she recognized all my wife’s issues and gave her very easy to understand yet important help to handle those issue them better. She is great in such that she already seems to know in advance what is needed by my wife and stays extra to help her until she understands the topic. Before working with Sylvia my wife was not confidant and her ability has grown. Sylvia has made studying for the GED it fun and easy. My wife has learned a lot in this relatively short time. It has been very easy and a great pleasure for my wife to communicate with Sylvia. My wife is extremely grateful to be able to study for the GED with Sylvia as her tutor.
