Fairmont State University (BA Ed French English)
U. of Akron (Master's)
I am a retired high school guidance counselor who lives part-time in northern Ohio and part-time in southern Florida. I always was the most excited when I met with my students. Getting them into colleges or careers was a passion of mine. A former French and English teacher, I am a great copy editor, so I love grammar and proofreading. My students always brought their resumes and essays to me for proofing. Rather than just editing, I took that opportunity to teach them their mistakes and encouraged them to re-write it themselves. I currently serve as a part-time academic advisor for the engineering tech dept. at Kent State University and I also love it. I was on the speech/debate team in high school and have coached those teams in my schools. I also taught driver's education in Ohio, which required a background check.
I love the English language and look at grammar as a puzzle that needs to be put together. I value diversity greatly, and always welcomed exchange students to the school where I worked. I also led student groups about ten times to Europe during my career. I believe in a practical approach to English. What do you need to get by day to day? That's what I try to teach my students who attend ESL classes in our church. I also know that all of us need to expand our understanding of world cultures.
I hope you will contact me with your needs in writing or speaking English. I am pretty sure I can help you with whatever you need. Best of all, my policy is confidentiality unless you indicate harm to yourself or others. That is a mandatory report! Can't wait to hear from you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a high school English teacher, I taught speech and often asked students to give oral reports. As a high school student, I was a member of our school's speech and debate team. One year I wrote an original oratory speech that I took to competition. I am very aware of students using filler words, etc. while they speak. I am also quick to point out word ending that get dropped or mispronounced.
