About Larry

Recently retired (May 2014), I looked at my resume and realized that I have been a teacher for most of my business life, from starting as a High School math teacher in Chicopee, MA to highly successful management positions in the business world, located primarily in Northern Virginia. Since retirement, I have been tutoring students, age 16 to 65, who have a variety of goals – goals like getting a GED to improve their lot in life and get a better job or a goal simply to make their kids proud, or for SAT prep kids, improving grades in SAT exam. I have seen students reach their goals and I have been proud to be a part of that. I have also seen students frustrated to the point where they simply throw down their pencils and quit. Most times, it’s because they were not able to see that they could do this and were just caught up in the continual wave that has stopped them from learning throughout their academic life. Some have difficulty in making the commitment that learning requires and stumble as they find that learning comes from within and is not entirely on the teacher.
My education is both Math and Business. I received a Bachelor of Science in Math from University of Massachusetts in 1971 and Master of Science in Management from American University in Washington DC in 1986. I was trained to be a secondary school teacher and I have a life-time certificate to teach in the state of Massachusetts. In my career, I have taught many and learned from many more.

Wide range of math subjects from whole numbers and fractions and decimals to algebra and geometry. Very adept at teaching in all levels.
I am a good teacher. I listen, I learn, I teach. I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I see a student grasping the concepts and “getting it” and feeling their own sense of accomplishment. We all search for things in life that we do well and when we find them, we are exhilarated when good things happen, and teaching has done that for me.
I have seen students come in at many different points of knowledge in math. In Math, as in many things, practice makes perfect – it’s one of the main things that any good Math teacher will emphasize and require from students.

Our first priority will be to see where the student is in their math knowledge. With that as our starting point, wherever that may be, we will proceed and if the student is willing, we will succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
