About Thomas

In my 11 years of teaching English in grades 7-12, the most painful moments from observing the look of frustration on the face of a student who "just didn't get it". The best moments came from seeing the look that said, "I know"; "I understand"; "I figured it out". Many times that knowledge and understanding required extra help and different approaches to individualized learning than were possible during normal class time. I worked with the High School Future Teachers Club. These motivated and exemplary students would work with students in academic difficulty on a peer-to-peer basis. I tutored the students of other English teachers in my department in literature, and especially, poetry. I also tutored freshman students who were in a remedial program at Temple University while serving as a Graduate Assistant.

My philosophy of teaching/tutoring is to provide positive reinforcement techniques to ensure that the student has truly mastered the task. That philosophy often requires various approaches to learning, whether attempting to understand the nuances of a poem, the rules of English grammar, or how to write a clear, concise paragraph. My goal when tutoring is not merely to prepare a student for the SATs or any other particular exam or test; but rather, to solve problems; in short, to think; to apply what he or she already knows to something new.

The tutoring can be done at a location of the student's choice.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My formal education includes 9 years of Latin and 5 years of Greek. This Liberal Arts background allows me to tutor students in all aspects of the ACT and SAT tests, especially, reading comprehension, English grammar, and essay writing.

American History

I took American history in high school, college, and graduate school. It has always been one of my favorite subjects, so I led one of the Team Teaching groups that planned how to incorporate English and history into the Advanced Placement curricula.

I often worked with students to prepare for the AP History placement test.

European History

I was a student of European history in both high school and college. As a Renaissance/Drama major, my professors insisted that we understand what was going on in the world from 1400-1725 so that we would understand why the writers, poets, and playwrights wrote how and why they did.

I taught European History in Summer School for two years with an emergency certificate.

Grammar

While a student in high school and college, I took eight years of Latin and four years of Greek. Both of these subjects made me well versed in the structure and etymology of the English language.

In addition to teaching grammar in grades 9-12, I tutored students in order to prepare for the SATs.

Literature

All literature has always been my joy and my favorite thing to teach and tutor. Examining the plot or character development of a novel, the intricacies or a play, or the imagery of a poem, still provide me with pleasure, regardless of how many times I have read the work. Both my degrees are in English. I have taught English literature for 12 years for grades 7-12. I have tutored students from two private schools in poetry in preparation for the SATs.

Religion

I had 21 years of religious training which included all major religions. I taught Comparative Religion and the Bible as Literature to 12th grade AP students for 4 years

Writing

I taught narrative, persuasive, and expository writing for 12 years.

After leaving teaching and joining the corporate world, one of my main duties was to write Feasibility Studies for clients. These lengthy documents, that took two to three months to produce, had to provide a clear road map to a company's CEO so that the CEO could intelligently produce a five-year plan or inform the Board of Directors how best to move forward on a project.

Able to identify needs — My 17 year old was preparing to take her college entrance exams. Though we were aware that help was needed, we were not able to identify the areas where she needed to study. Thomas was able to quickly recognize the weaknesses of the student . He was effective in providing a clear plan of study for my daughter. ...
