My goal as a tutor is to get the student to be self-dependent in the chosen subject matter. To achieve this, after discussion with the student I will recommend a book depending on the level of depth that the student desires to achieve. This provides a structure during the tutoring, and a resource that the student can refer to once the tutoring sessions are over. An additional benefit to the student is that this method lessens the amount of tutoring time required.
My experience ranges from my student years at MIT, my work and training at IBM, software development and consulting for small to large corporations, and business management through the founding and operation of several corporations. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For many years I worked as a consultant, developing entire applications to service wholesale and manufacturing operations using MS Access. The applications included databases, reports, queries (including complicated joins), and forms. They also included importing data from other applications.
As a business man and as an IT consultant, I used Visual Basic (VBA) as a background language to supplement complicated Excel spreadsheets.
This easy to learn programming language serves as a behind the scenes additional capability for the Microsoft Office application suite. With it you can do many operations that the native application does not offer. It can be used to extract information from legacy programs and to program functions that are unique for the user's application.
