I have academically assisted hundreds of students, working in a variety of institutions, including private and public schools. I offer my services on a private level and have been tutoring and home schooling students for years. I work at a personal level with my students, by helping them improve in subjects where they are falling behind, which simultaneously helps them progress in other classes as well. I am Wilson Reading trained which provides the skills necessary to help children and adults reach their highest academic potential, most especially if Dyslexia has been diagnosed. Enhancement for low readers with an emphasis on encoding, decoding and reading comprehension. MCAT Tutoring available. Homework guidance and assistance. I feel my manner is engaging and confidence-building. I quickly develop a comfortable rapport, making the learning both enjoyable and challenging. I look forward to working with you and/or your student!

Elementary (K-6th)

My goal is to help you or your student to improve in subjects in which they are falling behind. This simultaneously helps them progress in other classes as well. I have been a prominent figure in the elementary education field in Massachusetts and Florida for several decades. I have worked in both private and public schools. I am Wilson Reading trained to help low and slow readers as well as dyslexic students. The Wilson Program approaches the use of the basic phonics to help children both read and spell.
Phonics,

Phonics

I am a Trained Wilson Reading Teacher. I teach children the basics of phonics using a, e, i, o, and u. These letters are taught to be read in two formats. The short a,e,i,o and u may have a short sound which affects the way the word is pronounced. The same applies to the a,e,i,o and u which have a long sound. We also mark and break apart syllables in words. The breaks can be clapped or tapped stating the word. This allows the student to "hear" the letter chunks in the word to allow the student to better read. Short vowels, long vowels and syllables are what I feel are the very basis in teaching a child to read by use of phonics. This is the basis of the 12 step Wilson Reading Program that I have taught for many years.

Social Studies

Social Studies

Social Studies is a fascinating subject. I have worked with this subject from grade 4 thru grade 8. I always feel like I am taking my students on a new adventure as we go from interesting chapter to chapter. Each one tells us about our country and the specifics of each region of the United States. I have enjoyed working on many projects with students. I have worked a process where 25 topics are put on the board. The students each pick one and then they have a 3 month period to work through all the given assignments for their topic. At the end they are given the experience of sharing their topic with the class plus a very detailed board is created. This is truly 3 months of work with alot of expectations of the student. Watching their writing skills grow from month 1 to month 3 is worthy of this assignment. The research skills are also broadened as they must find all of their information by either using computer, IPAD's, textbooks or other learning specific materials. Social Studies classes also broaden the students vocabulary. Memorization must be involved before testing as there is so much to be learned specific to each section of the Social Studies guidelines. I look forward to helping your student on this adventure !

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have worked in a public system in Naples, Florida where ADD/ADHD and varying degrees of SPED students were the only students in a large section of the school. In most classrooms a behavior specialist was also present. We most usually had a ratio of 2 students to 1 teacher or often 1 on 1 with the student. I have a great perspective on the teaching of these students and the teaching and social methods needed in order to be successful with their varying degrees of special needs. A loving, caring, and understanding perspective needs to be kept at all times. I have especially worked with hearing and speech impaired students. I am able to use my Wilson Reading techniques with them to help them in their decoding and encoding learning structure. To be successful with SPED students you need to find the way they can learn and work from there.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

There are many signs and symptoms of dyslexia. A reversal of a b and d is a early signal for a young child, however, it can quickly be outgrown by grade 3. Dyslexia affects children and adults in many ways. Some see words on different lines as well as a sentence to them, could be spread throughout the page. Once it is determined how a child "reads" a page, a reading method can be developed to help the student track the words on the page for fluent reading. Many times students fill in their own words after then determine what the first sound of the word may be. They also skip lines as they read without realizing it. Successive reading with a trained teacher is the best way for a dyslexic student to progress. I am a Wilson Reading Trained teacher in the field of Wilson Reading which is a program initially designed to teach dyslexic children and adults to decode and encode words which therefore leads to better readers as well as spellers.

Special Needs

Special Needs

As an educator of children with "special needs," the first thing I work with is finding the way the individual child learns. Some children are auditory learners and some are visual learners. With special needs children these learning methods may not be part of their educational curve of learning. Once I have an accurate educational diagnosis I can then help support the means to an education that will meet their unique needs and prepare them for the method of teaching that best suits their special needs area. If a "special needs" student is in a inclusion classroom, and a IEP or a 504 has been given a student, the school works well with the tutor as they understand the need for classroom assistance and modifications in their learning. If a student is in a "special needs" class, most often a behavior specialist joins myself as the tutor, and assists with information helpful to the success of the student. I work very closely with the school as this is where the student does spend most of their time. My assistance during "out of school" hours, allows the student more confidence as he re-enters the classroom each day.

GED,

GED

In preparing students for the GED testing, I introduce study skills as well as organizational skills in order to move through the subject areas and determine where students face their biggest challenges. I feel it is necessary and appropriate that my students are taught by the latest educational tools offered to prepare for the GED testing. I use both the computer for practice testing as well as the most recently published GED Review and Practice Test material. With the results of my students practice testing, I can then refer to their area of subject need and find the skill areas in need of review regarding that specific subject. Therefore, not all of my students need to intensely review each subject once I determine through pre-testing what their low areas are. This allows the student to move ahead and feel confident in their more challenging areas as well as able to take the test and feel comfortable going into it which is valuable for success.

A very empathic and engaged tutor

I was working with Susan to get my english more fluently. Susan was so attentive, she recognized all my problems and gave me important help to handle them better. She has a very good high potential to watch what is need and to stay and help in a way, I could take the help without having the feeling to be unable. I had learned a lot in these relatively short time and it was a great pleasure for me to communicate in such an easy way with a woman I did not know before. I will miss her teaching and I am grateful that we have worked together.
