About Kelly

I have worked as a teaching assistant and private tutor in various subject areas for seven years.

I received a BA with Honors in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College in 2008. I was at UCLA for three years pursuing a Molecular Biology PhD--completing the required coursework. While I was a student at UCLA (2008-2011), I tutored high school students in subjects such as Geometry, Algebra, and Biology. I was also an undergraduate teaching assistant for three quarters at UCLA (1. Molecular Biology and 2. Genetics). As a teaching assistant, I led small group instruction (23-25 students), guided laboratory instruction, and graded exams and lab reports. I also served as a private tutor to thirteen UCLA undergraduates for the "Introduction to Molecular Biology" course. Since 2011, I have been working as a full-time tutor in Southwest Florida. Currently, I tutor high school and college students in math, science, test prep, and college admissions.

I'm passionate about both science and education. I have learned a great deal in the 6 years that I have tutored/taught, but with every student I learn a new skill. I adapt and adjust my skill-set to fit each student's needs and learning style. Education is and should be an ever-evolving learning experience for the educator. Therefore, it frustrates me to learn about school teachers who do not evolve in their teaching methods.

I go the extra mile to make sure that your child improves not only his/her grades, but also their general grasp of the subject matter. I have tutored students who were averaging C's, D's (even borderline F's) when I first started tutoring them. I love working with students who are struggling because it makes me proud to see them improve significantly and to see them take pride in their own achievements. I have seen my C/D/F students end their quarters with A's and B's. This is what I hope to achieve with every student that I have the opportunity to help. All that is needed is a bit of self-motivation, and the tutoring will follow through.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1, 2, Precalculus, and College Algebra in SWFL. These courses overlap significantly. I also tutor for the SAT and ACT, both of which include Algebra 1 material.

Algebra 2

I have tutored Algebra 2 for a little over two years now. In addition, if your child attends Gulf Coast High School, I am more than likely to be familiar with the teaching and testing methods of their instructor. I have tutored several Gulf Coast students in Algebra 2 during the past 2.5 years. I have also tutored college students at FGCU in College Algebra, so my knowledge of Algebra is extensive.

College Counseling

I have helped students with the college application process. I have edited college admissions essays, helped students fill out The Common Application, helped students apply for scholarships, and served as a general advisor throughout the process. My students have applied to a wide range of schools: from local universities, such as FGCU, to high-ranking institutions, such as Princeton University.

Precalculus

I have tutored pre-calculus for a little over two years now. In addition, if your son attends Gulf Coast High School, I am more than likely familiar with the teaching and testing methods of his teacher--as I have tutored several Gulf Coast High School students in this subject area. I have also tutored students at FGCU in College Algebra, whose material overlaps extensively with the material taught in high school pre-calculus.
