About A.L.

I have a rich and varied background both educationally and through my work. I have lived in Ecuador, Germany and Scotland and traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America. I have been a U.S. Naval Officer, homemaker and lawyer, but teaching is where my heart is. I have taught in both the classroom and tutorial environments and especially enjoy tutoring because I so enjoy seeing the great progress students make when they receive focused attention for individual difficulties they may be experiencing. I studied in Quito, Ecuador at the University level and so am well qualified to tutor Spanish. I lived in Germany as the wife of an active duty Army soldier for five years and have excellent pronunciation and good conversational skills to pass on to my students. As a former attorney and through my experience as a teaching assistant for Humanities courses, and my own study in literature,I am well versed in writing techniques. Clear and concise writing is achievable and involves some methodology but mostly is perfected through practice. Reading for understanding and memory is another important area that students frequently have difficulty with. Reading is one of my favorite activities and I believe that I can pass on this enthusiasm to my students! Learning can be fun, so age-appropriate games are included in my tutoring. But learning is also serious business, so I expect any homework assigned to be completed on time. I believe in a collaborative teacher-student relationship, since I think that I learn as much from my students as they from me, so I have a relaxed teaching style and do not like to pressure or embarrass my students. Learning occurs best when students are enjoying themselves and feel valued, respected and accepted for who they are. I think of teaching more as sharing my knowledge with the student to use in their individual way. Still, I am focused on student success in whatever endeavor they desire tutoring for! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

During my undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois and the University of New Mexico, I took a number of courses in Anthropology. In fact, it was my minor for my major of Latin American Studies which I completed at the University of New Mexico.

Classics

In addition to my own self-study, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for an undergraduate Humanities course at the University of Texas at El Paso. This course was titled "A History of the Idea" and involved an overview of western classical philosophy beginning with early myth and continuing through Ovid, Plato, Aristotle and Virgil. The course focused on how the philosophy mirrored and influenced classical culture and history.

Criminal Justice

I completed a Juris Doctorate degree in 1994 and have practiced as an attorney off and on since then. I completed one Law School course in Criminal Law and was appointed for two misdemeanor criminal cases in 2013 in San Antonio, TX.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as a substitute teacher in Killeen, TX from 2000 - 2002. During that time, I substitute taught in elementary, middle and high schools. In elementary schools, I followed lesson plans and so gained experience in teaching in the elementary (k-6th) context.

English

MA pending in English Literature from University of Texas at El Paso.
Completed an ESL certificate with Oxford Seminars Online.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified ESL/ESOL teacher. I received my certificate from Oxford Seminars on October 31, 2014 and taught ESL/ESOL/TOEFL in Istanbul and Antalya Turkey for one year. i have experience teaching beginning to advanced English learners and also in preparing adults for the TOEFL test. My experience is in both classroom and individual instruction.

Religion

I have had an eclectic religious background. I have attended and belonged to Christian, Jewish and Buddhist churches. I attended numerous Bible and Torah study classes and completed a graduate level literature course which also doubled as a religious studies course.

Spanish

While obtaining my BA in Latin American Studies, I studied at the Centro Andino in Quito, Ecuador for 1.5 years. I became fluent in Spanish at that time and learned also to read and write in Spanish at the college level. I have had experience teaching in bilingual classrooms at the elementary level, and also teaching private Spanish conversation.

Writing

I am certified as a TOEFL teacher, which has a significant teaching college level writing component. I have taught writing as part of this course to 8 students while working for English Time in Istanbul, Turkey.
I recently earned a Masters in British and American Literature from the University of Texas at El Paso, and writing effectively was an important factor in achieving this degree.

Terrific English tutor!

Amy M. is a very pleasant, confident, and appropriately patient tutor. She is sincere in her desire to provide assistance to her students and seems quick to assess what tools will be most effective. Our young Japanese student enjoyed all his lessons and grew increasingly more comfortable in his efforts to speak English with us after each session. Thank you, Amy M.!!
