In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's in elementary education, and I am k-6 certified in the State of Florida. I taught first grade for 12 years, 3rd grade for a year and 5th grade for two years. For 10 years I tutored K-6 graders at my school in our after-school program. I used the Four Blocks Reading Program. I used games using practice in reading and math. For K-2 I concentrated on phonics to increase fluency and for 3-5 I concentrated on comprehension strategies to increase this skill. In math I used "Math out of the Box" developed by Clemson University, using hands on, problem-solving, and reflection.
