About Deena

Dear Student,

My passion is teaching. I've been a teacher in the area of Information Technology for over 15 years with a focus in computer instruction from teaching at a university level to instruction in the basics of computers to students at home. The topics include introduction to software programs like Word and PowerPoint to more complicated instruction involving computer programming. I earned three degrees in the Information Sciences: an Associate degree in Programming, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences and a Master's degree in Information Technology. In spite of my level of education, I enjoy helping students at any level to understand any topic of computing. Many of my classes are at the introductory level, where students are just learning how to use a computer.

Helping students learn, understand, and succeed in a subject where they struggle, at any level, is very rewarding to me. I enjoy assisting students jump the hurdles and remove the fears. My easy-going personality and good humor help make students feel comfortable and at ease while learning. This approach is my specialty. Students learn and very quickly grow in confidence in a stress-free and relaxed learning environment.

Before teaching at a college level, I was a substitute teacher for K-12th grades for over 7 years. I was allowed to teach all of the subjects at all grade levels in the Clay County School System. Math is a fun subject for me to teach probably because I have been successful as a tutor in all levels of math for junior high and elementary students. Last, but not least, I have been a Children's Church leader for over 25 years. I love every minute of teaching children and I make learning fun.

I'll be so happy to meet you and to help you become successful,
Deena S.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've successfully taught/tutored many students in Algebra over the last few years through Wyzant and ITT Institute, and as a substitute teacher for over 8 years. It is exciting to be able to help students learn the math concepts they need to succeed, pass their classes, and gain in academic confidence.

ASP.NET

My qualifications include teaching ASP at the college level for over 5 years. It was a required course for three disciplines. I taught the subject for the bachelor's level Web programming degree, Networking Security degree and the CAD management degree.

Also, ASP was one of the languages used in a few of my Master's level programming classes. I've used in while working as a programmer too.

Basketball

I love all types of sports and played basketball in junior and senior high school. And, I was on the varsity team in junior high school and played intermural basketball in Senior High School. In 1980, I was a YMCA basketball coach for 3 grade through 6th grade in Holidaysburg, PA. We won the competition that year. It is a fun sport and elementary students are my target group. However, Jr. High school basketball coaching would be fun too.

Bible Studies

I've been teaching Children's Church for over 30 years. My research and study of the bible is extensive. I've also taught teens and adults many of the stories and themes of the bible.

I was a Cobol Student and COBOL tutor at the University of Florida as well as an Instructor Aide and Lab Assistant in the language. Most of the major Information Technology classes involved using the COBOL language. An IT student in the late 1990's could not graduate without having a proficiency in the COBOL language because many Jacksonville, Florida's industries use COBOL... Alltel, Winn-Dixie, Duval and Clay County school systems and CSX are a few industries that used COBOL as their main language.
