Vanderbilt University Law School (J.D.)
When I entered Law School, the introductory lecturer told us that the role of Lawyers was to teach and I have always been comfortable in that role. While in college I was a substitute teacher in inner-city elementary, Jr. High and High Schools in all curriculum areas. Out of that experience I came to understand how to motivate students to learn and to give them the self-confidence to make the attempt.
My approach to tutoring on any subject is first to make the student comfortable both with me the ensuing process. Depending on the Subject or Subjects to be taught, I try to first gather from the student his or her self-assessment of the subject they need help in, and what specifically they want to achieve with my help. I enquire into their strengths and weaknesses in the subject/s to better understand what tools I can put together and bring to the table to move them from where they are to where they want to go and I never bill for tutoring if the student or parent is not satisfied. Depending on the student and the subject matter, both homework and periodiotic assessments are given.
As I am qualified in a variety of subject matter there are no hard and fast rules that apply across the board but there are some common denominators. Establishing rapport, instilling confidence in both me and our collective ability to achieve their goals are some of them. It is important, especially with children and adolescents, in the initial interview, to try to relate to the student, in short, to try to give them reasons to like me, to trust me and to feel that together we can achieve their goal/s.
As a sufferer of untreated ADHD for many years, I am acutely aware of the challenges that face even appropriately medicated children and adults who have this condition. Being the parent of a child who, though bright, suffered from a variety of learning disabilities and deficits in addition to ADHD, I learned how to help him and in that process how to help other special needs children not simply to learn, but to direct their parents to resources explaining their rights under the law, and approaches they might take that would offer their child the best chance at achieving learning success.
My students are encouraged to give feedback both during and after the process. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken and passed, on the frst attempt, the Connecticut Bar Exam and practiced law for over 30 years. My foremost qualification however is that I love the law, that as a student I understood it almost intuitively. Despite suffering from undiagnosed ADHD I was able to graduate from Vanderbilt University School of Law near the top of my class. I was often asked then and after to help others prepare for the Bar exam, and most did it successfully their first time out.
I have managed several diverse businesses over the course of my career, all of which were successful; first a law firm, then a real estate development firm where I developed raw land and built and sold over 50 single family homes to being the Editor & Publisher of a million dollar newspaper. I have been a consultant to entrepreneurs and on going businesses for many years in the areas of management and finance. The newspaper I headed went from a 400k loss when I became CEO to a $15,000.00 profit for it's last quarter.
Over the course of my career I have the opportunity to mentor men and women in a wide variety of areas from my law clerks to my subordinates in managing a real estate developement firm to enlisting 14 people to write for the newspaper I published every week. I have been able to assess the potential of individuals and help them develop it, and on occasion have redirected individuals who sought my help into different careers than they thought they wanted but for one reason or another were no suited for. My best quality that I bring to the table is that my 'students' both like and trust me and my judgment.
As a lawyer who practiced both civil and criminal litigation for over 30 years, I have had an extensive background in the criminal justice system. While it seems that the education and experience alone qualify me, there are other interests and experiences that I bring to the table; I have lectured on constitutional law, sentencing guidelines and drug incarceration policy and the societal effects of our drug laws. I have also kept current on the major trends in the law nationally.
I have what I can only describe as an insatiable curiosity about how things work and science was one of my favorite and best subjects in school and beyond. I am well read on scientific matters and as I have enjoyed learning about scientific things I feel qualified to teach about them as well.
While the results of my philosophy exam here would not suggest it, I was a history and government major at the University of Hartford and qualified as a major in philosophy as well. I have been a candidate for statewide office on three occasions, lectured on such diverse issues as gerrymandering, consensus building, governmental organizations and the practical implications of the seperation of powers. I served at John Glenn's request on his National Policy Committee and have written extensively on politics and related matters.
I have always enjoyed public speaking and as a result won best oral arguement in Law School Moot Court competition, argued many cases successfully before trial and appellate courts and have a lecture series that I gave as an invitee of PBS on a media cruise in 2008. The lectures were on diverse topics from how to improve our educational system to the meaning of Globalization, to what I thought newly elected President Obama might accomplish. I was painfully shy as a child and overcoming that shyness enables me to help others do so as well.
