About Jonah

For me, teaching is a marvelous journey. I am deeply passionate about making music and stretching my creativity to explore the unknown, so in my teaching I cultivate students' own creative exploration. I don't want to only show you the chords, or the scales, I want to help you discover the ways that musical sounds move you, and how to harness them creatively.

That's not to say I don't teach concrete methods or styles. I teach rock, folk, jazz, classical and the many other styles I have studied, performed and composed in. I teach electric, acoustic and classical guitar. I am well versed in music theory and very familiar with the AP exam requirements.I have 5 years of private teaching experience, and have taught at several music workshops including theory at Lark In the Morning in Mendocino, CA, and guitar at the Jalisco Jazz Festival in Guadalajara, Mexico. I teach and have taught students of all ages, from beginners to life-long players.

I am a graduate of the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. As a performer I have played on all sides of the U.S., as well at international festivals in Eastern Europe and Mexico. In addition, I have released two critically acclaimed albums with my trio.

I look forward to guiding you along your musical journey!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

My background with both jazz and classical training means I have a wide array of strategies to help students wherever they are in their compositional path. I teach the fundamentals - counterpoint, fugue, harmony, motivic development, etc - as well as more advanced creative practices.

I have written over 50 works in classical and jazz, including pieces for symphony orchestra and 16-piece jazz big band. Many of my works have been performed around the country and world with my trio Sound Underground. I took over 8 semesters of composition classes at the Frost School of Music, studying jazz as well as classical and contemporary styles and techniques. I have also written and arranged works for other people, in many styles branching into rock and folk.

Ear Training

I took 4 semesters of ear training at the University of Miami, in addition to studying extensively on my own. I use a wide variety of techniques from functional classical styles, to modal jazz exercises, to atonal contemporary ideas. I am happy to assist in whatever direction is of most benefit for a student.

General Music

During my studies at the University of Miami, I took a broad diversity of classes and ensembles in styles including jazz, classical, rock, funk, salsa as well as music engineering and business. I can guide and assist in musical projects, endeavors and inquiries of many kinds.

Guitar

I am a professional guitar player, and I've toured and recorded extensively playing many styles from rock to folk to jazz. Any skill level, any style, I'll have something to bring you on your musical journey. I'll show you how to open up your ears and expand the way you think about music, in addition to teaching you the techniques and abilities to succeed on the instrument.

I have played the guitar for 12 years and am a full-time professional performer and teacher. I have worked with some of the best teachers on the instrument, including John Hart, Mimi Fox, Julian Lage and Mike Wollenberg.

Music History

I have been studying music history for many years, and it is a continuous part of my personal musical development. I am most well-versed in jazz history, but also qualified to teach classical music history as well as rock and blues. I am familiar with the requirements of the IB exam and can teach to that test as well.

Music Theory

Music theory is a daunting subject for many performers, for whom music is a manner of expression, not a science. As a performer myself, I have always fought hard to keep the art in music theory, because I believe firmly that it has the power to greatly enhance our creative potential, not stifle it. I teach music theory as the tools that it is to help us construct and understand the sounds we love, not as the "rules" many claim it to be.

I have an extensive background in common practice classical theory, as well as jazz theory, eastern harmony, and other more contemporary and avant garde techniques and ideas.

Sight Singing

As a jazz performer, sight singing is a very important skill for my musicality. I have studied sight singing in college, but more importantly I do it on a regular basis. I work with traditional classical sight singing repertoire, jazz pieces, and contemporary atonal techniques. I am happy to pursue whatever direction suits a student best.

Songwriting

I have been a songwriter since I first picked up the guitar 12 years ago, and have written and performed many songs. I have also done extensive work writing songs for other people, as well as arranging and recording them.
