About Jessica

"Grammar Queen" here! :) I graduated magna cum laude from Florida International University and tutored for 3 years as a writing consultant there, which has allowed me to collaborate with a diverse group of students with varying levels of writing experience. It has been truly rewarding to help them progress in their studies.

I can tutor in all aspects of English, writing, reading, and grammar, and I have an additional 5 years of writing/editing experience in my former professional career as a Senior Content Managing Editor. Here's more on my tutoring background:
- Guided students in brainstorming, drafting, and/or revising writing assignments (essays, research papers, cover letters, resumes, proposals, reports, dissertations, personal statements) across a wide variety of subjects
- Collaborated with ESL/ESOL students and occasionally students with physical or learning disabilities to help them improve their English literacy (reading and writing)
- Participated in ongoing development/tutor training on methods of tutoring, the writing process, different types of writing, communication skills, etc.

I love to see students light up when they realize they can achieve more and gain better results when they have the right resources and guidance to help them get there. I'm also a lifelong learner so it's always good to give back what I learn. I'm eager to help you in your areas of improvement.

I'm generally available some mornings and evenings as well as most afternoons, Monday through Friday, and on occasion, some Saturdays and Sundays at varying times of the day. My base rate ranges from $30-60/hour, depending on the level of difficulty, lesson frequency, and whether sessions are online or in-person. Please contact me for more details. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your learning/educational goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I've often helped students prepare for standardized tests such as the ACT, especially the ACT English section. I have 3 years of tutoring experience in English/writing and an additional 5 years of writing/editing experience in my former professional career as a Senior Content Managing Editor.

ACT Reading

I've often helped students prepare for standardized tests such as the ACT, especially the ACT Reading section. I can help students understand key concepts in given texts, evaluate the information, and draw conclusions from their reading. I also have three years of tutoring experience in English/writing and an additional five years of writing/editing experience in my former professional career as a Senior Content Managing Editor.

Basketball

I have been playing basketball since I was a young child. I've participated in several basketball camps throughout the years and have played both JV and Varsity Basketball in middle and high school. Through college I continued to play recreationally. I then became a player in a local basketball league, of which I've been a part of for the last three years. I enjoy teaching my fellow teammates how to improve their basketball skills by showing them proper techniques and demonstrating various plays in their respective positions. As a shooting guard, I specialize in three-point shooting.

Bible Studies

I've attended two Christian schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, allowing me to learn from the Bible, both personally and as a required subject. I've grown to increase my knowledge of Biblical concepts through the teachings at school and at my church. I also led Bible studies in college as a student leader for a few years with a student-led organization called InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, giving me the opportunity to teach firsthand the things that I've learned.

English

I have 3 years of tutoring experience in English/writing and an additional 5 years of writing/editing experience in my former professional career as a Senior Content Managing Editor. Also, I've often helped students prepare for standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT in the subjects of English, reading, and writing.

ESL/ESOL

As a tutor, I've collaborated with many ESL/ESOL students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are native Spanish speakers, to help them improve their English literacy. Having grown up in South Florida and being surrounded by the many different cultures and languages, I believe I'm well positioned to tutor in the area of ESL/ESOL.

Grammar

My peers call me the "Grammar Queen" for good reason. During my high school days, good grammar was continually drilled into us and as a result, many of the English grammar rules stuck with me throughout the years. This experience has helped me to have a successful professional career as a writer/editor, and I believe this also complements my tutoring skills.

Proofreading

I specialize in the area of proofreading. I often receive requests from friends, family, and colleagues to double check their work before they submit because they trust my editing skills.

Reading

I can help students understand key concepts in given texts, evaluate the information, and draw conclusions from their reading.

SAT Reading

I've often helped students prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, especially the SAT Reading section. I can help students understand key concepts in given texts, evaluate the information, and draw conclusions from their reading. I also have three years of tutoring experience in English/writing and an additional five years of writing/editing experience in my former professional career as a Senior Content Managing Editor.

SAT Writing

I have three years of tutoring experience in English/writing and an additional five years of writing/editing experience in my former professional career as a Senior Content Managing Editor.

Spelling

Growing up in school, I often competed in spelling bees and was always wanting to learn how to spell words correctly. This later became of great important since identifying and eliminating typos in my writing was key to my success as a writer/editor in my professional career. I believe this helps me to be able to further assist students in tutoring as well.

TOEFL

As a tutor, I've collaborated with many ESL/ESOL students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are native Spanish speakers, to help them improve their English literacy. Having grown up in South Florida and being surrounded by the many different cultures and languages, I believe I'm well positioned to tutor in the area of ESL/ESOL and prepare them for the TOEFL exam.

Vocabulary

I've always had a knack for learning new words and their meanings. As a spelling bee competitor in school, I had to learn a plethora of new words and their definitions, how to use them in sentences, and of course, how to spell them. My vocabulary continued to expand well into my professional career as a writer/editor. I believe this helps me to be able to further assist students in tutoring as well.

Writing

I have 3 years of tutoring experience in English/writing and an additional 5 years of writing/editing experience in my former professional career as a Senior Content Managing Editor.
