About Erika

I recently moved to Miami from Washington, DC where I was employed with the District of Columbia Public School System as a Library Media Specialist. I wore many hats during my time in the DC public schools, however, my most important role was that of a resource for students and staff in order to support learning in the classroom and to provide scaffolded instruction in the media center.

My students relied on my services to help them with daily homework assignments, research for papers and science projects and information literacy instruction so that one day they will be able to learn and research independently. Academic success for all students was and continues to be my motivation for seeking employment as a tutor in the Miami area.
During my time as a media specialist I noticed many shifts in the priorities of public education.

I felt that policy, standardized tests and, ultimately, money became the driving force behind how and what we teach our children. This new era of education, in my professional opinion, leaves many gaps in a student's knowledge base and harms their overall academic achievement. A lot of my time was spent teaching children basic grammar skills in conjunction with content related assignments. Sadly, there was no time in a teacher's schedule to accommodate these basic skills.

As a media specialist, I started developing lesson plans that starting building these crucial foundational skills that were lacking in my students in an attempt to fill in the blanks that homerooms teachers had no time for during their instructional blocks.

The areas I focused on were basic grammar and the writing process, which included the composition of essays and papers for classroom assignments. Proofreading and the editing process was another component of my daily responsibilities. In addition, I helped students learn how to read or help them improve their reading skills. I also spent a lot of time on science projects including the research component and the scientific method. I assisted student's in all elementary level subjects for homework help and test preparation.

Please contact me with questions and/ or scheduling information if you feel like your student could use academic support during the school year. I look forward to any opportunity that will provide a rigorous and holistic experience to a student's academic life!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I worked for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) for 6 years as a certified Library Media Specialist. DCPS uses the Common Core Standards to teach content. It was one of my responsibilities to research and provide materials to classroom teachers that support Common Core. In addition, I was required to align the American Library Association standards with Common Core in my lesson plans for instruction in the media center.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as a certified Library Media Specialist for an elementary school for 6 years in a public school system. My primary responsibility was to promote literacy in the library, in the classroom and throughout the community through literacy related events. In addition, I participated in weekly collaboration meetings to support curriculum development and implementation in the school.
