About Christopher

I recently graduated from the University of Miami with honors in English Literature and a minor in History. During my time in college I took 15 English classes and a total of 20 writing-credit classes. I wrote over 30 college-level essays, finishing with a 3.9 GPA in my English major. In my final year, I wrote an optional 25-page senior thesis in which I analyzed the processes of literary interpretation in William Blake's poem "America a Prophecy." For my work, I was recognized as the honoree for UM's "Outstanding Student in Literary Studies Award."

I have three years of experience tutoring English, History, and SAT Prep. I have worked with over 25 students, including every grade level from 6th-12th. I have edited and proofread essays for college students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

For the SAT, I tutor the Reading, Writing, and Essay sections. I have a firm understanding of the redesigned SAT format. My philosophy is to work on improving foundational skills, test-taking strategies, and time management. Every student I have worked with has seen a significant improvement in their test scores.

I am very passionate about literature, writing, and rhetoric. I enjoy sharing the benefits of these subjects with my students and helping them realize how fundamental they are to everyday success.

Some specific things I have helped students with:

• drafting and writing essays
• college application essays, personal statements, term papers, etc.
• editing and proofreading graduate-level dissertations
• preparing for the SAT Reading, Writing, and Essay Sections
• developing sentence patterns and rhetorical strategies to improve writing
• learning the fundamentals of grammar
• improving vocabulary
• composing speeches and practicing for presentations
• completing literature assignments

Whether you need assistance with homework, essays, standardized tests, study techniques, grammar, or anything in between, I am positive that I can help you improve and enhance your control of the English language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated from the University of Miami with honors in English Literature. I took 15 English classes, 7 of which were upper-level coursework, and a total of 20 writing-credit classes. I wrote 34 college-level essays, finishing with a 3.9 GPA in my English major. In my final year, I chose to write an optional 25-page senior thesis in which I analyzed the processes of literary interpretation in William Blake's epic poem, "America a Prophecy." For my work, I was recognized as the honoree for UM's "Outstanding Student in Literary Studies Award."

Grammar

Nouns, articles, linking verbs, adjective clauses, subjects and predicates, direct objects, prepositional phrases, participles, modifiers – grammar can be complicated, but I believe it doesn't have to be. I have helped multiple students learn the fundamentals of grammar, always starting with the basics to ensure that they have a solid foundation to build upon.

Literature

I took 15 courses in English Literature at the University of Miami, earning an average GPA of 3.9 in those classes. Of those fifteen classes, seven were at the 400-level (the most difficult level offered to undergraduates).

Here is a list of some of the courses I took:
"Shakespeare: The Early Plays", "Shakespeare: The Later Plays", "Early Romantic Literature", "Late Romantic Literature", "Transatlantic Gothic Literature", "Early Modern English Drama", "Major American Novelists: Edgar Allan Poe", "The Bible as Literature", "British Literature - Survey", "Literature and Psychoanalytic Theory".

Proofreading

I have edited and proofread countless essays for college students at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I also have proofread a wide variety of subjects, including papers on literature, marketing, and even environmental science. I have a firm understanding of standard writing conventions, syntax, grammar, and proper formatting.

SAT Reading

I have a firm understanding of the new SAT format. My philosophy is to work on improving foundational skills, test-taking strategies, and time management. Every student I have worked with has seen a significant improvement in their test scores.

SAT Writing

I have a firm understanding of the new SAT format. My philosophy is to work on improving foundational skills, test-taking strategies, and time management. Every student I have worked with has seen a significant improvement in their test scores.

Vocabulary

In the GRE Verbal Reasoning section I scored in the 97th percentile, earning a score of 166 (out of 170). This section is almost entirely a vocabulary test - analogies, antonyms, and sentence completion questions all test your understanding of high-level college vocabulary.

Writing

In college I took 15 English classes and a total of 20 writing-credit classes. I wrote 34 college-level essays, finishing with a 3.9 GPA in my English major. In my final year, I wrote a 25-page senior thesis for which I was recognized as the honoree for UM's "Outstanding Student in Literary Studies Award." I have since helped many students improve their writing, ranging from the middle school to college level.

Knowledgeable and well prepared.

My son is a high school sophomore who needed guidance for his research paper. Chris came well prepared by familiarizing himself with the assignment prior to the tutoring session. He arrived on time and was very courteous. My son was very pleased with the tutoring.
