About Ivelise

My name is Ivelise. I recently graduated from St. Thomas University with a master degree in special education. My goals include teaching special Ed students and students with limited English proficiency because I believe in the right to a better education. Language blockade and learning disabilities should not be a reason why individuals are not provided with the best quality of education needed in order to be successful in life. I know, having a passion sometimes don't mean a thing, if one is unwilling to explore the different aspect of it. I understand there is much more to education than simply teaching it and I am willing to learn as much as I can.

I believe in the power of education that is why I am determined to become an educator. Besides, I was a proud corps member at City Year. I served as a mid-year at Norland Senior High School where I played the role of a mentor/interventionist. I worked alongside of a 9th grade English teacher, where I provide additional assistance to the students such as differentiated Instruction (DI) that centered on the teacher's current area or subject of focus. We provided after school tutoring, where I worked one on one with my students to deepen their knowledge and understanding in any area of struggle, though my main focus is ELA (English and Language Art).

I also do attendance check, to ensure that specific students are coming to school and what is the driving factor behind the absence and work along with the students to create goals that will enable the student to show up to school. Before City Year, I used to be a tutor. I tutored students from k-12 in various subjects such as English, algebra, science, history, reading ect. I traveled from house to house to educate students from foster care and students with learning disabilities. I gained the experience that all students learn differently and have different learning style, some students learn at a slower pace but that does not mean that they don't have the ability to succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
