About LaShondra

Hello, My name is La'Shondra J., often called Ms. J by my students. I am a Miami native and have returned recently to work as a teacher after graduating from college in 2014. My friends would often call me goofy/funny and I often reach my students through humor. I believe in reaching my students' needs by being who they need me to be. Meaning, although I enjoy a good laugh I am strict when necessary with students who need a more direct approach, and can be very supportive for students who may require a softer touch. I mold to my students' needs, while making lessons fun, energetic and interesting!

I am qualified to teach 6-12 English/Reading and have been a teacher for 2 years at a high school in Miami. I have taught intensive reading classes as well as honors and pure writing classes. I have also worked in Saturday school with both seniors and tenth graders for ACT/SAT help and retakes.

I have been acting since I was 14 years old and am in the process of starting my own non profit for youth in the arts that will teach academic skills such as reading comprehension, writing, and public speaking though acting. I still act now and have recently finished a movie and several plays in the Miami area.

I am excited to engage with new students, and since we are out of the classroom I am excited to be able to try new approaches to enhance the learning experience! I guarantee not only a well spent hour with me learning, but a fun one and can't wait to meet you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have been a public speaker throughout my college career for various organizations including Zeta Phi Beta, Sorority, Inc., National Council of Negro Women, and the National Panhellenic Council. My background in theater has helped in this tremendously, allowing me to captivate the audience attention and articulate my words while speaking audibly. I am also currently in the process of starting a nonprofit and have tutored performers in the ability of public speaking. My class at my high school is actually called speech where we focus on writing, reading, and speaking publicly in front of others.

Theatre

I have been acting since I was 14 years old. I went to a performing arts high school in Fort Lauderdale (Dillard High School) and minored in theater in college. Since college I have been in a series of plays and films in south Florida building my theater resume and I have directed two shows, coming up to my third (a youth play) this summer, and I am writing a play as well. The nonprofit I am starting will focus on teaching youth transferable skills such as public speaking, reading comprehension, and writing through acting. I am also currently the COO of Youth Development for a theater production company known as Triple A Productions, Inc.
