About Matias

Ever since a child I have loved to learn and discover. How many pennies could fit into the Empire State building in New York? How old does one have to be to run for president of the United States?

These quirky thoughts have rattled my brain and will for years to come. That curiosity has driven me to help others learn and grow as well. As a recent graduate from the AmeriCorps Pathways to Success Program in Orlando, I have learned how to educate and motivate under-performing high school students to seek and meet their potentials in all fields.

I know learning is a tough business, coming from the Political Science Department from the University of Central Florida, you learn that fact first hand. I also know that when great minds meet, greatness happens. Lets grow together and let me help you envision and realize your passion in education.

I have two years of formal collegiate Spanish education and also Spanish training from my family. Growing up in Miami, Florida, one quickly absorbs and regurgitates Spanish phrases, slang, and culture. Luckily for me, I had parents who taught and forced me to practice my Spanish everywhere I went.

With a series of trainings and workshops from my experience at working at Oak Ridge High school, I learned firsthand the nuances and strategies of teaching Exam preparation from a Collegeboard consultant, and by acting on that training with various workshops administered to the Juniors and Seniors of Oak Ridge High, we were able to increase scores tremendously. Studying for the SAT and ACT is tough stuff, especially with the renovated SAT that just came out. With me we can tackle these new questions, and help boost your scores!

With an eye for critical thinking and analysis, I would love to develop your thought process so you can develop your own air tight arguments, laser sharp focus, and work ethic. I will not only help you reach your goals, but I will help you meet and exceed your potential with encouraging feedback, tireless tutoring, and a laid-back attitude that lets learning feel fun and enjoyable.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I tutored and learned from ACT strategy professionals while working at Oak Ridge High school in Orlando, FL. I'd love to show you my strategies and help you get the score you want.

American History

I have a background in American History and have tutored at a High School in AP U.S. history which covers the bulk of U.S. history up until World War Two.

Anthropology

During my Undergraduate education at the University of Central Florida, I studied Cultural Anthropology as my minor. I took Introduction to Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, People's of the world, Public Anthropology, Sex Gender and Culture, Linguistic Anthropology, and Disease and Healing. All of these courses have assisted my understanding of Anthropology from a holistic approach.

Government & Politics

My job history includes research, working in the past Florida governors election as a poll watcher, working at a local high school and assisting the Government and AP Government courses and tutoring college freshmen in introduction to American Government.

Political Science

My undergraduate degree is in Political Science with a concentration in American Government and domestic policy. I have done extensive research at UCF concerning how the public assesses domestic policy decisions and how much political knowledge average Americans possess. I have taken American Government, Constitutional Law, the American presidency, local and state politics, Mass media in politics, the intelligence community, contemporary revolution and political violence, comparative politics, and much more.

Spanish

I tutored in College for two semesters in college level Spanish 1 and 2. I also worked for Oak Ridge High School as a Spanish tutor after school working with students from 9th-12th grade.

Tennis

Since I was 13 years old I have practiced Tennis. From age 16 and up, I decided to attend private lessons on a regular basis. In high school I played for the team and was able to attend many district tournaments. Now age 23, I have had the chance to become assistant coach to the girl's tennis team here at a High School in Orlando. I have logged about 150 Hours teaching, running drills, and privately tutoring tennis players to better their skills in terms of advancing their forehands or back hands, improving serves, improving volleys, and improving returns.
