About Elizabeth

In my own academic pursuits I have developed a strong passion for learning while cultivating the techniques and study habits necessary for achieving success. I aspire to instill the same excitement towards learning that I have in others, and help students discover their unique passions, abilities, and interests. With years of teaching and mentoring experience, I am fully equipped to work with students of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds.

My studies are in English Literature and Political Science, with minors in Psychology and Spanish, however, I offer tutoring services for a variety of elementary and intermediate level subjects including English, math, social studies, sciences, and test prep.

I have several months of experience as a teaching clinician at a local learning center. In my experience in this position, I have worked with students of all ages (4 yrs.- adult), and of all learning abilities to strengthen language perception and reading comprehension. I have a great deal of experience working with students ranging from mild to severe on the autism spectrum, as well as students with auditory processing disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. I fully appreciate every child's unique learning style, and constantly work to ensure that each of my students receives the specialized instruction they need to thrive.

I have completed several semesters of upper-level coursework in English, and have a firm understanding of literature and language topics. I have a fair amount of experience in peer editing, and have worked as a freelance writer and columnist. Any issues with reading or writing are sure to be resolved with challenging, but rewarding lessons.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have several months of teaching experience working as a clinician at a local learning center. The majority of my students were elementary-aged (grades Pre-K-6). In addition to providing specialized instruction to improve literacy and fluency, I provided academic support to improve students' performance and continued success with school work. Regardless of whether I was intervening to bring students up to grade level, or giving a boost to set them ahead of the curve, I always involved level-appropriate material and provided my students with strategies for application in the classroom.

English

I have completed several semesters of upper-level coursework in English, and have a firm understanding of literature and language topics. I have a fair amount of experience in peer editing, and have worked as a freelance writer. Any issues with reading or writing are sure to be resolved with challenging, but rewarding lessons.

Handwriting

While working as a clinician at a local learning center, I taught Pre-K instruction to many students of various learning abilities. With these younger students, I implemented a variety of engaging activities-- several of which were focused on teaching the alphabet and improving handwriting skills.

Literature

I have completed several semesters of upper-level coursework in English, and have a firm understanding of literature and language topics. I have a fair amount of experience in peer editing, and have worked as a freelance writer. Any issues with reading or writing are sure to be resolved with challenging, but rewarding lessons.

Phonics

I have several months of teaching experience working as a clinician at a local learning center. In this role, I provided specialized instruction to improve literacy and fluency by applying a dual-process model of sensory cognition to improve symbol imagery (word attack and phonological processing), concept imagery (word recognition), and contextual reading, along with overall comprehension. I have studied native and secondary language acquisition in a number of contexts, each of these focusing largely on implementing phonological concepts alongside other necessary components to improve reading ability.

Reading

I have completed several semesters of upper-level coursework in English, and have a firm understanding of literature and language topics. I have a fair amount of experience in peer editing, and have worked as a freelance writer. Any issues with reading or writing are sure to be resolved with challenging, but rewarding lessons.
