New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music (Jazz Performance)
Hey! My name is Thomas and I'm a Jazz musician from Miami, FL. I'm primarily a trombone player, but I also play drums, piano, and trumpet as well. Music is my life, love, and passion. Anything having to with it, whether it be listening, performing, recording, composing, and it brings me lots of joy to share what I know with others. In 2011 I graduated from New World School of the Arts, one of the top music high schools in the country. In my time there I gained many awards including 2 consecutive Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards in the "Jazz Soloist" Category, 3 consecutive Essentially Ellington "Outstanding Soloist" Awards, and an NFAA YoungArts Merit Award in "Jazz Trombone". By the time I had graduated high school I had performed with many great artists including Ira Sullivan, Herbie Hancock, John Fedchock, Duffy Jackson, Wynton Marsalis, and many great local artists in the Miami area.
After that I continued my studies at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. I was given the opportunity to study with some of the best musicians in New York including Elliot Mason, Laurie Frink, Charli Persip, Sam Burtis, Charles Tolliver, David Gibson, and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens. I've just recently completed my studies.
Now, I'm back in Miami, and I'd love to share what I know with YOU! Playing music brings me lots of joy, but sharing it is what's gratifying for me.
I've taught private lessons, tutored theory, helped students with ear training, and conducted my own rehearsals/sessions. I'm strong suited to teach brass, basic piano, help students with music theory, and give drum lessons.
If music is something you, your friend, your family, or your child is interested in feel free to let me know.
Thanks for checking out my profile and have a wonderful day! Hey! My name is Thomas and I'm a Jazz musician from Miami, FL. I'm primarily a trombone player, but I also play drums, piano, and … Read more
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As well as being a brass player, I'm also a drummer. I started playing drums in high school, learning my rudiments, playing in small combos, and practicing regularly. At this point, I feel comfortable performing in a typical Jazz, Rock, or Hip-Hop setting. I have a drum kit at home, and can offer beginner/intermediate drummers a solid foundation to start becoming fluent on the instrument.
I've been playing trombone since I was young. I graduated from New World School of the Arts and gained many awards including two Downbeat Student Awards in the "Jazz Soloist" category, three Essentially Ellington "Outstanding Soloist" Award, NFAA YoungArts Merit Award in "Jazz Trombone", and the NWSA Jazz Award(2011). Just recently I've completed my studies at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.
Although trombone is my main instrument, trumpet was my first instrument when I began learning music. I find there is relativity in how all brass instruments are played, and brass technique is perfectly transferable between them. My teaching focuses are fundamentals, warm-ups, technique, and repertoire the student wishes to learn.
