About Bruce

I was in the eighth grade when I decided that I wanted to teach history and coach basketball. Little did I know at the time that 39 years later I would still be living that dream. To be frank, I am unable to imagine doing anything else with my life. I have a burning passion to teach young people to think historically, to question the world they live in, and to discover their passion. I am driven by the effort to figure out how to get young men to sacrifice self-interest for the good of the team. I can think of no more magnificent way to spend each day.

My real journey began 30 years ago when I was fortunate enough to be hired at Muncie Burris Laboratory School. Muncie Burris was no ordinary school. In fact, it was unlike any school I had ever been in. It was a progressive laboratory school modeled after the laboratory school at the University of Chicago. It was a school where the focus was the common core long before anyone dreamed of the common core. It was the place I learned the methods of Hilda Taba and Jerome Bruener. It was the place where I learned about the Harkness Table. It was the place I learned to push students to think critically and to question. It was the place where I learned that young people could do amazing things when the focus was not an inch deep and a mile wide, where concept development was more important than coverage, where authentic assessment was the norm before it had that name, where textbooks were considered taboo and where everyone was considered to be both learner and teacher.

After 11 years at Burris, my journey took me to Fort Wayne Canterbury a private preparatory school and 7 years after that on to San Dimas High School. Along the way, I built relationships that last to this day, with athletes who played for me and students who I encountered in class. One of my players even asked me to be in his wedding. At every stop along the way, I became a leader, pushing colleagues to think deeply about the art of teaching. While at Burris I lead a successful effort to implement an amazing senior seminar. At Canterbury, I brought with me the senior seminar idea and also pushed for the creation of May Term. Finally, at San Dimas I led my department to begin to teach students to read like historians, to focus on historical thinking skills, to move beyond the textbook and to start having their students write on a regular basis. Along the way, I have been honored by the University of Chicago, Johns’ Hopkins and by Williams College for my work in the classroom. This fall I am taking my experience, my knowledge, my passion and my abilities to the Wildwood School in West Los Angeles.

Looking back on it I am thankful that in the eighth grade I found my passion. I am still learning and I look forward to at least another 20 years spent pushing young people to use their minds well and athletes to subvert self for the good of the team.
