About Alex

I am a third-year music education major at Florida International University (FIU). I provide tutoring in the area of music – history, theory, vocal performance, and Piano – and in the area of the English language – reading, writing, standardized testing, vocabulary.

I have certified proficiency in Piano, and I have completed my learning of Music History in college. My knowledge ranges from early music, renaissance, baroque, classical, all the way down to contemporary music. I am versed in the lives and music of well known composers such as: Mozart, Handel, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, Stravinsky and others. I am proficient in different styles: classical, pop, Broadway, Gospel, and Jazz. I have performed many times as a pianist. At my church, I have occasionally substituted my music minister. I also serve as keyboardist and music director of the Youth service. Furthermore, I have accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists at different performances. I have been teaching piano independently for several years.

I have been fortunate to receive the mentorship of some exceptional people. Lloyd Brockington, a renowned South Florida musician and teacher, taught me both piano and voice, and put me on the path of music. I have studied voice with Robert Dundas – a wonderful tenor and voice teacher who has had a successful career in Germany – and Mark Aliapoulios – a baritone who sand with the Boston Opera and served as a tenured teacher at Boston University for twenty years.

Also, I regularly sing at my church, where I am bass section leader, soloist and psalmist. Scholastically, I had a role in the spring opera as a Freshman, and was featured as a soloist for a presentation of The Messiah by Handel when I was a Sophomore. I am a member of the prestigious FIU Concert Choir. As a high school senior, at the all-district competitions, I won the highest rate of “superior” for solo vocal performance.

In other areas out side of music, I have also found great success, especially in Language related subjects. I took AP English: Composition in 11th grade, and AP Literature in 12th grade. I was one of the highest scorers in ACT English among my classmates. All throughout High School, I volunteered to tutor fellow students in English, in order to pass the FCAT and improve scores on the ACT or SAT. I helped them in different areas, such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and essay writing. This experience was very gratifying. My assistance helped several students gain eligibility for High School graduation. I graduated Magna Cum Laude at North Miami Senior High in 2013.

I am knowledgeable in different genres of writing: narrative, persuasive, and exploratory. Through my tutoring and learning, I have also become a specialist in personal statements for college application.

Moreover, As a native of Haiti, I grew up speaking French, and was fortunate to attend some of the best schools, including the prestigious Institution Saint-Louis de Gonzague. At North Miami Senior, I took AP French in 11th grade, and passed the test with a maximum score of 5.

I believe that education is the epitome of personal, intellectual and social advancement. Since my primary school years, I have always had tremendous respect for my teachers because to me they were these super beings that facilitated the thing I liked to do most, learning. I've always known that I wanted to be like them. I wanted to make a positive impact on scholars who needed guidance in their learning. I wanted to help scholars be better and attain the highest level of success they could. A recipient of numerous academic scholarships post-graduation, I know of the silver lining that awaits after devoting hard work and dedication into learning.

My goal when teaching is to keep the student challenged and engaged. I will not overwhelm you with a lot of information and expect you to retain it. I am systematic in how I approach each lesson and I am very perceptive to whether or not a student is getting frustrated or confused.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

I am able to help someone in French grammar, which is a complicated thing. I can also assist in French conjugation -- present, imparfait, passé compose, subjonctif – and vocabulary. Another area I can provide help is in translating English to French but within the context of the French language, its grammar, structure, and its culture. People taking a French class often struggle to make that distinction and tend to translate word for word.

In my country Haiti, French is the official language of teaching. Beyond school, I also grew up speaking French at home. Back in Haiti, I was fortunate to attend some of the best schools, including Institution Saint-Louis de Gonzague. As a result I was able to take AP French at North Miami Senior and passed the test with a maximum score of 5, which also fulfilled my foreign language requirement in college.

Music History

I have taken all four music history classes necessary for graduation in the BA in Music program at Florida International University. My knowledge gained from these classes range from early music, renaissance, baroque, classical, all the way down to contemporary music.

In the Classical period, I am well versed in Mozart and Handel, among others. In the Romantic period, I know very well Verdi, Wagner, and Puccini. I know how to perform the music of these composers, and by familiarizing myself with their biographies I have come to understand how who they were as people affected their music.

I am also knowledgeable about 20th Century “Modern” music. I understand the concept and application of atonality. Of this period I know well several authors, from Igor Stravinsky to John Cage.

Piano

I have been teaching piano independently for several years. I teach piano to people who are at a beginner or intermediate level, regardless of age or background. My assistance will make the student better at reading music, getting accustomed to different patterns based on the scale, and the piece of music about to be played, interpreting music better.

Reading

As a young immigrant (9th grade), I learned English very fast. I was already taking advanced English classes after my sophomore year. In 11th grade I took AP (Advanced Placement) English: Composition, and in the 12th grade I took AP Literature. Thanks to that, I was not required to take the first English/Composition class in college. Also, I was one of the highest scorers in ACT English among my classmates.

I can teach someone how to better retain information while reading a text. In order to succeed, the reader must read quickly enough but efficiently, going along the text while detecting the main idea of every paragraph using context clues.

My main involvement in High School also centered on English. Although I had passed it in the 10th grade, I was well aware that the FCAT was one of the biggest problems at my school, with low passing rates even among seniors. I was also aware that many of the students were young immigrants like me, struggling to learn while adapting. I dedicated myself to helping them.

My goal, when teaching, is to keep the student challenged and engaged. I will not overwhelm you with a lot of information and expect you to retain it. I am systematic in how I approach each lesson and I am very perceptive to whether or not a student is getting frustrated or confused.

Vocabulary

In vocabulary I aim to get a young student above his/her level. I do so my having them learn progressively while remaining curious. I show students how to find the meaning of words without having to use a dictionary, but instead context clues.

I have tutored kids in the 2nd grade and up.

Voice (Music)

I can vocally train someone who is at the beginner level. A student can expect the basics of singing from my teaching: posture, breathing, vowel placement (how to sing a specific vowel on a specific note), interpretation and style appropriation, differentiating belting and classical singing, understanding and connecting registers (e.g. using head voice to shift gear), sight-singing and sight-reading in general, singing in different languages (I have sung in German, French, Italian, Spanish, among other languages).

Discovering my musical sense in High School, my teacher and mentor Lloyd Brockington was also the one who got me started in vocal music, suggesting me to venture into choir. From the 10th to 12th grade I was part of the Male Ensemble at North Miami Senior High, the prime singing group at the school. I had been a section leader since entering the group. In 11th grade and 12th the Male Ensemble performed at the all-district competitions, and in the 12th grade, I won the highest rate of “superior” for solo vocal performance.

I had found my path. I successfully auditioned at Florida International University and was accepted in the music program. So far during my time as a student, I successfully auditioned for a role in the Spring opera in my Freshman year; I successfully auditioned to be featured as one of the soloists for a presentation of The Messiah as a Sophomore; and I have been a member of the FIU Concert Choir since entering the program, the prime singing group of the School of Music. I have been fortunate to study under the wings of Robert Dundas – skilled tenor and voice teacher who has had a successful career in Germany – and Mark Aliapoulios – a baritone who’s had a the Boston opera and served as a tenured teacher at Boston University for twenty years. I am a bass-baritone myself.

I get to perform vocally at my church as well, as I have been the bass section leader for over three years, and less recently the psalmist.

My vocal forte is classical/Operatic music, therefore I am trained to project my voice without the need of amplifying devices. However, I am also involved in the pop, jazz, soul repertoire and perform these genres as well.

My goal, when teaching, is to keep the student challenged and engaged. I will not overwhelm you with a lot of information and expect you to retain it. I am systematic in how I approach each lesson and I am very perceptive to whether or not a student is getting frustrated or confused.

Writing

When tutoring essay writing, I show the student how to build an essay map. An essay must be planned before starting it. I show students that this systematic approach is better than just attempting to write off the top of the head. The student must know what will be in this or that paragraph before writing it.

In terms of style, I teach students how to not be redundant, that that means avoiding stating the same thing twice, or stating one thing by using too many words. I lead the student to be more precise in concise in writing.

In terms of genre I am knowledgeable in narrative, persuasive, and exploratory writing.

I am also knowledgeable in creative writing: poem, fiction. I have been writing poems myself as a leisure for almost 10 years

I have tutored essay writing since High School. Along the way, I have become a specialist in personal statements. I have helped many people, younger and older, with writing their essays for college application.
