About Ralph

English writing, reading, and grammar are my strengths, as are such foreign languages as German, Spanish and Portuguese; I am also accredited to teach social sciences and history by the State of Florida Department of Education. I have helped students prepare for the English part of ACT/SAT/GRE and GMAT exams. Additionally, I have a master's degree in TESOL education and, over the past three decades, have taught English as a second language on four continents. I also teach math.

I employ an interactive approach that encourages critical thinking and seeks to evoke answers from students. A patient, sincere educator, I try to instill a spirit of adventure and purpose in each tutoring session. My ultimate goal is to awaken a love of learning that turns you into your own teacher.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a master's in TESOL education.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a master's degree in TESOL education and Florida state certification to teach history and social sciences.

German

I began studying German at age 12, then had it throughout high school and college, including one year at the University of Bonn. German literature was my undergraduate major. I later worked as a translator and teacher in Munich for two years. I continue translating from, and teaching, German to this day.

GRE

Strategies I applied before taking the GRE helped me score in the 98th percentile.

IELTS

I have worked with language all my life -- first, as a writer/reporter who covered the gamut of beats and was published in papers as far afield as the Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, Miami Herald, and Philadelphia Inquirer; second, as a translator from five languages into English; and third, as a college professor teaching writing composition, ESOL reading and writing. journalism, Spanish, German, and foreign affairs. For several years, I have successfully prepared students for not only IELTS, but also GRE, GMAT, ACT, and SAT exams.

Social Studies

I passed the State of Florida's subject-area exam, which entitles me to teach social sciences in public schools, grades 6-12.
