As a CELTA certified ESL teacher (Cambridge University Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), I am eager and passionate about sharing my love and knowledge of the English language. I work with beginners dreaming about holding a basic conversation in English and students requiring a more advanced approach with a specific goal in mind. I like to get to know my students on an individual basis so that I can assess their personal or professional needs and design lessons that specifically meet their aims. I enjoy meeting and working with students from multicultural backgrounds and believe that patience and understanding are crucial in order to boost the confidence and comfort level of the ESL learner. I believe in creating interesting, lively, and practical lessons based on authentic materials. Above all, my lessons are student centered where the priority is to have the learner practice English as much as possible. In that way, grasping grammar concepts, working on pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, and accent reduction all have much more relevance when placed in real life situations.
I have a doctorate in US History and have taught both undergraduate and graduate classes at Florida International University. With my background in history and my CELTA certification, I see learning American English going together with learning about American culture. We will read literature, watch movies and discuss current and historical events so that you can learn to use the language like a native speaker. Since I am British by birth, however, I also have expertise in British English and can teach you the differences between the two forms in terms of pronunciation, spelling, grammar, and idioms.
I am an experienced editor and writer and have worked on many books in fields ranging from business, to science, to medicine, to law. So I am ready to help with your professional or school writing. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
