My love of teaching has stemmed directly from my love of learning, which is why I am pursuing a Master's in Education right now. My teaching experience began with tutoring my peers in high school and college and editing papers for classmates. Before graduating college, I decided to pursue my TESL/TEFL/TESOL certification and went on to teach ESL to students of all ages in a bilingual school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This was an invaluable experience for me which ultimately led to my decision to pursue education and eventually educational consulting for admissions as a career.
I believe teaching is a hands-on profession and I value a calm teaching atmosphere and sometimes nontraditional methods especially in my approach to ESL. I believe experiential learning is the best way to approach subjects such as ESL, English and History and love to bring in "real world application" in order to help my students understand the concepts better.
Another facet of tutoring that is essential to me is structure -- I come prepared to every tutoring session with a lesson plan and try to utilize every minute of the tutoring session. I don't believe in distractions or wasting time, because as my client, you wouldn't be getting your money's worth if I allowed that in my tutoring sessions. Having managed a classroom in Argentina, I know the importance of keeping students on task and focused and implement this in my sessions.
Because I am a graduate student, my schedule is extremely flexible and can work around yours.
Lastly, involving my cancellation policy, I do like to know at least 8 hours in advance if there will be a cancellation in order to accommodate my schoolwork.
I look forward to working with you and/or your child! My love of teaching has stemmed directly from my love of learning, which is why I am pursuing a Master's in Education right now. For each additional student, I charge $30 per hour. So for 2 students I would charge $90, for 3 $120, etc.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent time abroad in high school living in Rome, Italy studying the classics -- mainly Latin, Art History (Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Art), Classical Literature and Italian -- all of which I continued studying when I returned to my boarding school in the States as a "specialization" within my curriculum.
I have done freelance work with a college counselor and have worked with students independently on their applications to college honors programs. Furthermore, I have worked in admissions for my boarding school and interviewed applicants internationally for the school. I am in the process of starting my own independent admissions consulting practice focusing on college and boarding school admissions.
I am a certified and trained ESL/ESOL tutor with experience both within the United States and abroad. While I can and have managed a classroom setting, I prefer one on one or small group sessions in tutoring because of the ability to engage directly with students and improve their conversational skills. I work with all age groups, from young children to adults and truly love teaching ESL!
My major in university (The George Washington University) was political science. Additionally, I worked on Capitol Hill for all four years of my college career.
