In the year 1967, I joined the New York City Police Department, and I retired in 1988 as a sergeant with over 20 years of service. As a result, I have gained a unique experience that not many civilians have gone through in life. This experience has been beneficial in helping me in giving a different aspect to teaching not taught in school. Many of my former students have commented that I teach "out of the box," leaving an effective remembrance of lessons not experienced in other classes.
In the year 1988, I joined the Florida Department of Corrections and retired in 2000 as a lieutenant. This experience has taught me effective methods of communication, not only with troubled individuals (inmates), but with people from all walks of life [race, religion, age, economics, etc.].
In 2001 I was awarded a Master's Degree in TESOL [Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages] from Florida International University. In the year 2001, I was employed by Miami-Dade College as an adjunct professor in ESL, also now known as "World Languages". I am still presently employed, teaching speech, reading, grammar, writing, and accent reduction in levels 1-6. I now have over 12 years of experience teaching credit courses, adult education courses, private tutoring, and computer laboratory speech and writing courses at MDC.
In short, my experience in law enforcement, teaching, and tutoring have allowed me to become an effective instructor in many aspects required for speakers of other languages to become successful in the English speaking world. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated at Florida International University in Miami, Florida in the year 2000 with a master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages [TESOL]. I have been teaching English at Miami Dade College for the past 14 years in the subject areas of speech, reading, grammar, writing, and accent reduction. Furthermore, I have been teaching as a private tutor in private and public schools and to as many as 20 to 30 students every semester.
I have taught speech levels 1-6 as an adjunct professor at Miami Dade College. As a instructor, I have followed a plan which includes strategies, planning, using pictures, and public speaking practice in front of an audience of other students, to prepare students to become successful public speakers of English. Furthermore, I teach "Accent Reduction" for speakers of other languages to speak clearly and more effectively when confronted with giving a speech to others at a meeting or job setting.
