University of Exeter (UK) (Spanish)
Originally from London in the UK, I have spent most of my life teaching, tutoring and managing educational programs in number of countries around the world, including the UK, Canada, Greece, the Middle East, Venezuela and the USA. My first degree is in Spanish, which included living and studying for some time in Spain. Later, I moved to Quebec (Canada), became qualified as an English language instructor through the Canadian Immigration Service and also received a French diploma from the Universite du Quebec, and worked with newcomers who needed to learn English and French. Later on, I went on to train language teachers in Quebec school districts, and spearheaded a bilingualism language program for the Montreal YMCA, which gave instruction to over 4,000 adult learners. I later moved to Athens, Greece, and joined a partnership in 3 language schools, teaching personally as well as managing one of the schools, providing instruction for 450 students a year.
In 1988, I was recruited by a European language group to go to the USA to open up an international language school in Miami. Later, I went on to become Vice-President of a language school from Venezuela which opened operations in the USA, and I commuted between Miami and Maracaibo as their Vice President of Operations, helping the two schools develop a high-quality program and well-trained teachers. I also was Operating Manager for the Inlingua group of language schools in Florida for some years. To become more acquainted with the K-12 educational system in Florida, I taught for 3 years at a school (K-8) in Broward as the Spanish and French specialist. My final full time work has been to help establish a non-profit educational organization to help low-income academically struggling children to excel in their school work, and today this foundation is working in 28 states of the USA.
Now in semi-retirement, I still work in education as a consultant for schools that need help with curriculum, teacher training and general operations. Since teaching has always been my first passion, I continue to teach (Spanish, English & French) mainly to adult professionals who need to learn another language for their work, or by the fact that they are living in multilingual South Florida and want to benefit from all the many cultural opportunities available. Funds raised help go towards a children's program I have established in the Philippines. My programs are highly individualized programs which meet the needs and unique learning styles of each person I work with. That is why I find it important first to discuss with the client and prepare a training program before we have the first class. Congratulations on your decision to work with another language! Clifford is not a common English teacher. He is an excellent person and an incredible adviser. I strongly recommend him to anybody who truly wants to learn English properly.
I found Clifford B. on the WyzAnt site for an employee of ours seeking ESL/English tutoring and received this feedback from the employee: "I am pleased to inform you that my language classes with Clifford are going great. I will keep you posted about how it progresses, but so far he seems to be a very good person with the necessary skills to help me to reach my goals."
I have been working with Clifford for about a month. He is great! He knows a lot about business and writing skills. I would highly recommended to anyone looking for a tutor! I have been working in two different business plans and he knows a lot of material. Great person, always on time, easy to reach!
Clifford is very professional and has extensive knowledge. He focuses his teaching based on my needs, he is also a consultant. I definitely recommend Clifford as an excellent tutor.
Alex: I appreciate your comments. Thank you. It is very satisfying for a tutor to work with somebody like you who is so enthusiastic about improving language skills, and quickly learns how to self-correct. I believe you are making some very significant changes to the way you communicate in English: congratulations!
Clifford has a very simple way of teaching is very attentive and with a wide experience in teaching executives. Recommended.
Thank you, Carlos. It is a pleasure to work with you: you are goal-driven, and it has been both interesting and rewarding to construct a customized program for you.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received a Teaching as a Second Language (TESL) diploma from the Government of Canada. I have 35+ years of TEFL/TESL experience, teaching in Canada, the UK, Greece, the Middle East, Venezuela and the USA. I also have managed and operated several language schools in all of those countries. This included training and providing continuous professional development to my own staff of instructors. I have authored articles on English language acquisition (published by the Government of Canada), and wrote the Teacher's Book for an ESL basal series designed for adolescents. I have also served on a US Federal Government committee which established quality standards for English language acquisition. Finally, I continue to advise a leading English language group from the UK on USA-based programming needs in English as a second language.
I Lived, worked and taught in French in French-speaking Canada (Quebec) for 8 years, and developed a bilingualism program (French/English) for the 10 branches of the Montreal YMCA (4,000+ learners per year), and established similar programming in Toronto. I also operated French language training for a number of Canadian and multinational companies, including the Holiday Inn, Bell Canada, Telecom Canada and the Bank of Nova Scotia. I was also contracted to provide teacher language training workshops for several school districts, and was one of the advisers for the Quebec Government to support the change of workplace language from English to French. During the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid (NY), I was the Administrator of the IOC Medical Commission, and worked in French with the Chair, a member of the Belgian Royal Family. In Florida, I taught French for several years at the Vista School in Coral Springs to grades K through 8. I went on to open and operate a language school in Miami Beach, and we became recognized by PEEP, the French National Parent-Teachers Association for our language courses fo children and teenagers. A past member of the French-American Chamber of Commerce, I remain well connected to the French-speaking business communities of South Florida, and maintain contacts with language schools and companies in France. I also go every summer to Provence.
Originally from the UK, I have been involved for some years with the originators of IELTS, the British Council, and the University of Cambridge Examination Board. I was an examiner for the Cambridge suite of English language examinations for some years in Greece, and introduced them to South Florida, establishing the first examination center here in Miami. The IELTS test is different from all American tests, in that examiners are not looking for standard answers, but rather for a set of skills which demonstrate original thought in English. I do not focus only on test preparation: although it is important to be well acquainted with the IELTS testing format, my experience teaching IELTS has demonstrated that the student who is well coached in advanced vocabulary, grammar and fluency skills will not only succeed in the IELTS, but will also be skillful in the full use of English in the workplace and in all general situations.
My first degree is in Spanish. This included studies at the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain. In the USA, I was working for several years in a private school (K-8) as the foreign language specialist, teaching Spanish and French to all grades. Currently, I am teaching Spanish to international executives (and their spouses) who have relocated to South Florida, and who need to communicate in Spanish for their work, especially with regards to doing business with Latin America. I also have traveled for business extensively in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile, as well as Puerto Rico. Additionally, for two years, I shuttled between Miami and Maracaibo (Venezuela), managing and operating language contracts in the petroleum industry, as well as for the region's Universidad de Zulia. My main strengths are to bring a learner from non-speaking to independent usage of the language within a specified period of time, and to customize the experience according to need.
I have coached learners for many years in TOEFL test preparation, here in the USA, as well as in Canada and Europe. As a qualified English teacher, TOEFL test preparation has always part of the suite of programs I have provided to students. For some years, I managed and operated an Academic English program on a university campus in central Florida, whose international students needed to improve their TOEFL scores in order to succeed in their degree programs. The focus of my training was on improving vocabulary, grammar and fluency, so that the reading, speaking, listening and writing skills required by the test format would be well established with my students. In more recent years, I also introduced TOEFL test preparation courses into the Universidad de Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Currently, I am an educational advisor to a language organization, and train instructors on how to teach ESL/EFL, including TOEFL test preparation.
