About Noraida

Teaching is in my genes. I discovered this passion while in graduate school in Spain. I started teaching English as an opportunity to make some money while still studying. It so happened that at the time there was a growing demand for English in that country and consequently, they needed native speakers to teach it! I seized the opportunity and eventually made a career in the language business, from teaching to becoming a teacher trainer, language school administrator and eventually director of a student exchange program.

Teaching and being bilingual has opened doors for me professionally and allowed me to have the amazing experience of living in Europe for 14 years. I have always believed knowing a second language is a plus, no matter what career you choose to pursue. I was born in New York and my mother, who was from Puerto Rico and a Spanish teacher herself, made sure we spoke both languages, Spanish at home and English, outside. It paid off alright.

Upon my return to Puerto Rico from Spain, where my parents were living at the time and eventually Florida, I continued in my professional trajectory as an independent consultant, specializing as a corporate trainer, on customer service and intercultural communication skills. I eventually landed a job as a language school director in Tampa, after having worked as an ESL trainer for the same company in Miami. Once again, language teaching opened the doors to other opportunities and I will always be grateful for this special skill (I'd rather call it a gift), which is in my nature and I enjoy so much sharing with others.

As to my style and methodology I use the direct method. My extensive experience has proven it to be effective with students whose main objective is to communicate in the language and gain confidence through the process. I don't believe in recurring to the "comfort zone" of translation. I have seen far too many students that have studied it for long periods but still can't speak the language...In my opinion, that defeats the purpose. Structure and grammar are important and of course, progress will be measured by it but, in order to really improve, you should enjoy your classes and come out feeling "today I learned something useful".

Each student is unique for that reason the plan to follow should be designed according to your level, availability and needs. I invite you to contact me with your concerns and or questions. An oral proficiency level will be established during the first class.
