About Patrick

Do you have "mathphobia"? In my years of teaching research methods and statistics for government, I have found many students afflicted with this dreaded disease. It has three stages. Stage one starts with anxiety that occurs the first day of class and leads to what I call the "dear in headlights" look. Stage two occurs when the professor writes and erases formulae on the board so quickly that you can't understand them, leaving the deer (you) lying unconscious by the side of the road (i.e. classroom). Stage three occurs as you become completely lost and loose hope of understanding anything in the class at all and feel like you have just been run over, your road kill. Don't let yourself become road kill.

The preceding anecdote while hopefully humorous, is designed to show you that I have dealt primarily with students who have a great deal of anxiety about math in general and statistics in particular. In addition to holding four academic degrees including a PhD in Public Affairs I have been teaching for seven years as the university level. While I have taught many different subjects I specialize in the application of math to public policy issues. Over the years, I have developed great proficiency in a method that has proven results as it is designed for all types of students. This method is discursive, relying on the problem based learning approach. This approach allows students to build confidence while learning math concepts, not just memorizing formulas.

I have also privately tutored students from all educational levels, from elementary school to those earning their graduate degrees. I have a passion for education and the learning process. I sincerely believe that given the right environment and pedagogical method any student can reach their potential.

I specialize in hard to reach students. Even if you have failed before, tried tutors before, just give me a chance to prove to you that your "mathphobia" can be cured. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
