Columbia University (Chemical Physics)
My name is Jorge, and I am a recent graduate of Columbia University with a degree in chemical physics and a premedical concentration. Though my background is primarily in science and mathematics, I am also proficient in the areas of English, particularly grammar and reading/writing skills, and history. I am available to tutor all levels of math from elementary level to differential equations and linear algebra, as well as most fields of science, including elementary to advanced physics, chemistry, organic chemistry and biology. In the field of history, I am available to tutor American history as well as World history, and in the area of English, I can tutor anything from grammar and vocabulary to essay writing.
Tutoring for standardized tests is also available, including the SAT and ACT as well as most SAT Subject Tests. Students will receive a practice book and will be expected to complete homework from the books in between sessions.
MCAT tutoring across all four sections is also available. Students will be given a diagnostic exam and lessons will be tailored towards the students strengths and weaknesses. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent grades 6th through 12th at a Jesuit school were I took theology classes each year. On top of the bible studies I did in those classes, I studied the bible as a work of literature extensively through my first two years of college. Having been raised a lifelong Catholic also has led me to a lot of exposure to biblical studies.
As a student of Columbia University, I am required to take two year long classes called Literature Humanities and Contemporary Civilization. Through these two classes, I have read Homer's Odyssey and Iliad, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Virgil's Aeneid, and most of the great plays by the Greek tragedians, including Oedipus, Medea, and the Oresteia. I have actually studied these myths since elementary school, having been lucky enough to attend a school where the classics were stressed. With all my experience studying Greek and Roman mythology, it would not be difficult to tutor the subject of classics.
518 MCAT Score (128 Phys/Chem, 131 CARS, 129 Bio/Biochem, 130 Psych). I have 1.5 years of experience tutoring for this exam. I am particularly adept at tutoring for the CARS and Psych portions of this exam.
