I have been teaching for over twenty years. Half of my experience has been at the university level and the other as a history department chair for a very successful middle/high school. I have taught English, reading, writing, ESOL, as well as ACT and SAT prep for a local test prep company. My students have won numerous essay contests and cash prizes with my guidance. I can also teach Arabic reading and writing. I believe patience and organization are key in helping students succeed. I have been teaching for over twenty years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Arabic is my first language. I speak, read and write fluently and have an understanding of mainly the Levantine colloquial dialect but a very good understanding of the classical Arabic which is what unites all Arabic speakers. I was born in the Middle East and spent my middle school years there where I was instructed in English, Arabic and French. My Arabic lessons continued with both parents teaching us reading and writing through textbooks and scripture all the way through my university years. I continued with a brief advanced grammar course at my local mosque while my children were receiving religious instruction. I have also taught my children to read and write in Arabic.
I have 25 years of teaching experience, mainly in ESOL and History. I addition to teaching at various universities, I have been the department chair of Social Studies at Doctors Charter School (6-12) for the last ten years and have put together a program that incorporates domestic and global citizenship. I have always had a "highly effective" designation as a teacher. Most recently, I taught a dual enrollment course for Florida International University that focused on women's issues in the Middle East. I taught my students basic Arabic terminology, phonics and grammar as part of this course.
Although I do not have a degree in Arabic language, I believe that I can easily teach someone up to an intermediate level of conversing, reading and writing.
