In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My degree in journalism combined with my tutoring experience in English, including reading, writing, spelling and grammar, makes me a great choice to help you succeed with English. I have tutored many students including those who speak English as a second language. I am happy to help you with writing, reading, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and other tasks using the English language.
When I worked with City Year, I helped remediate about 20 students with a comprehensive reading intervention program. I planned lessons aligned with the Common Core standards and instructed small groups of students, providing individualized attention when needed. I created factual, inferential and critical thinking questions for the students after reading together. I also planned activities and used worksheets to make sure my students fully understood the reading material.
I began on the JV team my freshman year of high school. I was on the varsity team for the next three years of high school. I played at position 4 for singles and position 3 or 4 for doubles. I also played in USTA junior tournaments from age 16 to 18. I coached elementary and middle school students in the summers of 2009 and 2010.
As a journalism major, writing has always come naturally to me. I love being able to communicate with others through written word. I enjoy helping students with essay structure, grammar, word choice and other important writing skills. My experience in communications includes writing for newspaper, radio and magazine as well as blogging and social media platforms. I am happy to work with you on essays, resumes, short answer questions or any other writing task!
