I am an experienced, mature teacher and tutor with with over 20 years of experience and a master's degree in TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - from Florida International University. I teach in the ESL Department at Miami-Dade College. I am thoroughly familiar with standardized tests and have taught SAT preparation class at Barry University and Nova Southeastern University. I have taught adults and adolescents in ESL (conversation, reading, writing, grammar), TOEFL, mathematics (arithmetic, algebra 1, basic geometry) English (reading, writing and grammar), FCAT, GED, PSAT/SAT, GRE, ACT, CPT, SSAT/ISEE preparation. I have traveled extensively and am comfortable with students from all backgrounds and cultures. I am bilingual (English/Spanish).
I practice a relaxed-but-focused style of learning and believe in obtaining and reacting to constant feedback from students as to what the student understands and needs to know to be proficient in each subject. I believe in the maxim that in order to master something a student should watch or listen first, practice to be able to perform, and then be able to explain the material to someone else. Learning by active involvement is key. I often like to use music to aid in learning process, especially in ESL. Hugh is an excellent tutor. He has worked with my son for the past few months in preparation for the SAT's. His tutoring has resulted in an amazing 280 points increase in my son's Math/Reading SAT scores. I considered several different Prep courses before deciding on Hugh. The cost for a class setting where 12 students share 1 instructor was comparable to the private sessions I set up with Hugh. This one-on-one SAT prep was invaluable! Hugh developed a personalized course of action to see these dramatic results. He assigned practice work to hone my son's skills and then he would review and advise on areas that need correcting. Hugh did an excellent job keeping my son accountable to the work he needed to do to be ready for the SAT's. My son felt more confident and self-assured taking the test. His scores reflect that these feeling were rightly placed!
My son needed help with the math portion of the PERT in order to be accepted to the School for Advanced Studies Kendall Campus. Hugh was helpful and encouraging. We met three times. He was able to explain well and give hints on test taking. My son passed.
Hugh tutored our son to help him prepare for taking the S.A.T. exam. Our son had taken the exam and gotten a good score, but we wanted to find a tutor who would be able to greatly improve his score, to ensure his acceptance to school. Hugh was always prompt for his tutoring sessions. He was extremely patient, encouraging, and came with extraordinary knowledge of how to succeed in taking the S.A.T. He left our son with the knowledge and encouragement he needed to ace the test. Our son's test score improved drastically after only a few months of tutoring. When my son got his score, and then again when he was accepted into the university of his choice, he contacted Hugh to give him the good news and to thank him. We could tell that Hugh was genuinely thrilled for his success. I cannot recommend Hugh highly enough. He is a patient and extremely knowledgeable man who truly wants to see his students succeed. .
Hugh recently helped my daughter prepare for the ISEE test, and she was very happy with his approach and patience. He was very clear with his explanations and provided excellent examples for her to understand every topic.
Additionally, Hugh was able to provide sound guidance in regards to what to expect from the test and how to navigate through it. I would definitely recommend him.
Mr. C. has been tutoring my daughter since 8th grade and she has done excellent for the past three years. He has tutored her in the areas of Algebra and Geometry.
Hugh is a fantastic tutor. Very very patient and careful. Recommend strongly without reservation. My son had Hugh for SAT review and we were very happy.
Hugh is an amazing tutor. I got tutored for SAT and the results were amazing; I went up a hundred points on each subject we reviewed. He has extensive knowledge of how the SAT approaches the student because he takes the test when the students do! He doesn't only use traditional SAT style questions, he uses other styles from sources other than college board that are very helpful. You can really tell that he takes his job seriously, for he has so many things he can explain and help you learn them. He is very dedicated and very patient. It was a great experience.
I am a student of Miami Dade and I just started using Hugh as a tutor for mainly math. He has taught me a lot in a short amount of time. He is very patient friendly and makes me feel good about myself and confident in what I am learning. I would definitely recommend him. I've tried many tutors in the past and none of them were nearly as good.
Just adding to my review because I took my math portion of my GED this morning. After taking practice TABE and receiving a 370 I decided to hire Hugh for extra help. I worked with him about twice a week for 90 minutes for approx. a month and he helped me raise my score up to a 520!!! WAY higher than I would have ever expected. I honestly would have never been able to do it without him. He gave me practice work for home and explained things so well. I am VERY happy!!!
We first contacted Hugh to get our daughter some tutoring with her ASVAB (entrance exam for the military); he was patient and flexible, and helped her get over her fear of math. After much studying and a steady, committed tutoring schedule, she scored extremely high on her ASVAB, which in turn helped her score high on her SAT as well. We are proud to say that she is now in her Plebe year at West Point Military Academy.
Although nothing can be achieved without the will and effort of the student and the parents, I would also like to emphasize how vital a committed tutor is to a student's academic success. A great tutor can afford a student a deeper understanding of the course material, and that understanding sparks the confidence and the 'edge' that helps them succeed in their endeavors. Hugh is definitely a great tutor, and we highly recommend him.
Hugh C was very accommodating around my son's busy schedule with school and Soccer. My son went into his EOC very confident as a result of the time and effort Hugh had given in a few sessions over the last month. I believe the one to one tuition will make the difference between a pass or fail for the EOC and my son is positive he has passed.
Teacher Hugh is granting that I improve my skills and gain confidence in achieving my goal. He is a very patient and devoted tutor. He overstepped by far my expectancies.
Thank you, Mr Hugh.
Hugh is very thorough and very patient! He makes sure that the student understands before moving on to another lesson.
Too expensive when we worked so slow. He is a smart man, but I wouldn't pay him to tutor me again and I wouldn't recommend him to my friends. I am a great student in my school. I admit math is not my subject but I pass every year with B's so he should have been more respectful and patient when I was paying him to help me in the first place.
Hugh tutored my son for the ISEE Exam. Hugh is a fantastic tutor – and a genuinely nice, responsible/responsive person. Our experience was just simply excellent – my son improved a great deal and scored well on the exam as a result of Hugh’s tutoring. My son really enjoyed learning as a result of how Hugh conducted the tutoring and interacted with him. Lastly, my experience was that Hugh will always work with you if you have any questions or problems, or specific areas that you would like to have him focus (he really aims to keep his students happy and their parents satisfied – but still providing the desired results). Simply an all-around great experience and I would wholeheartedly recommend to all.
What can I say! he is an outstanding tutor who helped me to reach my goals: improve my pronunciation and fluency in English. He gave me the tools I needed, now it's on me to practice what I learned from him.
It's a really a great tutor! He is really amazing in math, English (SSAT and TOEFL), but I think his main plus is his kindness and will to work with his pupils. When I have started working with him I was alright in English and math, but after one month working with him I really understood the difference as now I am much better, and I really have a great pleasure and fun of working with him. So I advise this tutor for everybody!
Hugh is an awesome tutor with his own unique strategy. He was very helpful, and we enjoyed the lessons! I would recommend him to the students who are preparing for exams like Sat, and Toefl.
I thought Hugh's soft-spoken demeanor, worked well with my daughter's personality. She doesn't deal well with constructive criticism in general, but Hugh was able to correct her without much drama! I think he gave helpful hints for both writing and math. I can already see improvements in both, after the first lesson, with homework that was assigned. Hugh is very professional, and responded promptly to text messages and emails.
I only went up 50 points in my SAT math. He could have explained things a little better by helping me decipher the steps i should take in solving problems instead of waiting for me even if i had no idea what the steps to some questions were; That was time consuming and confusing. I didnt like my experience.
Gabriela claims to know her score for the math portion of the SAT, but she took the test on June 2nd and has not received the results of the test yet. These arrive in 3 to 4 weeks after the test is administered. In addition, she consistently did not complete the assignments I gave her and appeared to spend very little time outside of our tutoring session working on techniques or strategies we covered.
After only one two hour session, my son has shown great improvement in Geometry! Mr. C. is an EXCELLENT tutor! Very professional and very patient!
If you need help on the ASVAB, Hugh is the one you should pick.
I was looking for someone than had knowledge in tutoring the ASVAB test and ended up choosing Hugh because of his feedback and come to find out he is better than I anticipated. He made learning easy which encourage me to ask questions without embarrassment. I thought hes teaching techniques were very efficient because I understood the problems in the first try, refreshed my mind in things I thought were impossible to learn quickly. HIGHLY RECOMEND HUGH FOR YOUR TUTOR, TRUST ME YOU WILL GET YOUR MONEYS WORTH!
He examined my son's reading issues quickly and was able to target specific areas to help him.
We will be scheduling more classes.
Hugh was very patient and kind, which made me feel at ease. He helped me look at word problem sums from a different perspective. It made what I have to learn seem a lot less daunting. Thanks Hugh!
I have met with Hugh two times already. He teaches/tutors with patience and makes me feel comfortable. I'm hoping he continues his teaching with patience. I look forward for more sessions with Hugh until I pass the ACT.
Hugh was able to explain things in a very simple and accessible way even to a non-native speaker. He is very patient and can always rephrase things if you don't understand them the first time. Thanks for your professional help, Hugh!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My interest and proficiency in basketball has been lifelong. Since elementary school, I have played on a regular basis. In high school and college, I played competitively. In my junior and senior years of high school, I was the leading scorer on teams which won our league championship and was also chosen as an all-star both years. After finishing college, I worked as a coach for a junior varsity team. Since then, I have played recreationally and never miss watching games when I have the opportunity.
