My background has been rooted in education for years now. I began teaching in 1974 and was blessed to work in private high schools all of these years. Later on I was drawn to working with adults and so inquired about
teaching on the community college level and was hired by Southern New Hampshire College. At the time they were situated on the Air Force Base in Brunswick, Maine. I taught English Literature and Philosophy for the
college. I must say that my favorite years of teaching were on the Secondary level of education. I enjoyed challenging the students and working with a wonderful and professional staff.
What I consider to be an advantage in the field of tutoring students is the advantage of one-on-one education. The tutor gets to know his student and the individual needs that surface as the two work together. Further,
the tutoring fosters a certain level of trust between both the tutor and the student. The student comes to realize that the tutor is concerned about challenging, nurturing, and providing a level of confidence that insures the student will succeed and make the better choices and judgments in his/her life.
The ability to challenge the student and inculcate a strong sense of confidence, for example, the ability to speak with confidence and articulation is prime. The student should know that he/she has a command of the English language and that he/she will succeed if they establish a certain discipline within their lives, a discipline that calls for growth and confidence in the self.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
