At the age of about 18 months my parents discovered I was deaf and from that point forward they sought to give me every available opportunity to succeed. At age 5 I was enrolled in school and began learning American Sign Language. But not only did my parents want me to communicate with ASL, they also desired they learn to speak orally and read lips. This has afforded me the best of both worlds as I see less go between the deaf and hearing environments.
I believe this experience qualifies me to help you learn American Sign Language at your own pace and also learn how to communicate with someone who is hard of hearing.
Currently, I am the ASL teacher at a private school in Kennesaw. I am confident in my system for helping you learn how to communicate effectively with people in your life who are deaf and use ASL as there primary mode of communication.
As to my personal life, I am a wife and mother of three grown children. I enjoy cooking, exercising, the outdoors, sports and traveling.
If you are just interested in learning ASL or if you are a student learning to be an ASL interpreter and you would like for me to help you, please contact me. I am lots of fun and I will help you work hard to achieve your goal to learn ASL. Let's begin soon. At the age of about 18 months my parents discovered I was deaf and from that point forward they sought to give me every available opportunity to succeed. Melissa is an excellent teacher and obviously enjoys what she is doing! She is well prepared and organized, and she jumps right into her lesson, so that no time is wasted. She puts her students at ease with her friendliness and motivates them with her enthusiasm. My children are very excited about sign language and have learned a lot. Melissa brings helpful resources (handouts, flash cards, along with suggestions of a book and an app), and she knows how to drill the students in a variety of ways. We will miss the class time with her once it comes to an end!
Missy is an AMAZING teacher!! Very patient and wonderful to work with!! My daughter has enjoyed each and every lesson and has learned so much!!
Thank you very much Missy!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As one who is hard of hearing, I have the ability to communicate with students who are struggling to communicate with their hearing family members and friends. I will seek to help your student to develop their sign language skills and lip reading skills in order to build confidence in their ability to communicate. I am hard of hearing for 48 years. I speak very well.
As a deaf person who is able to communicate with ASL and by reading lips and speaking, I am uniquely qualified to help you not only learn ASL but to also learn how deaf persons communicate. I will help you learn at your pace and challenge you to become proficient in your ASL skills. Our time together will be fun and educational.
I've played softball since I was 7 years old. I was MVP twice on my high school team and won a softball scholarship. I was a member at USSA. I would love to teach girls how to play better with field skills like batting, catching, and body movements. I am willing to teach pitching also. I have taught kids before, but I am seriously pursuing a career as a coaching tutor.
