Louisiana Tech Univ - Ruston, LA (B.S. in Mathematics)
Hi. My name is Les and I am a retired high school/middle school math teacher. Actually, in my 25 years of teaching I taught General Math, Prealgebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Advanced Math, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Physical Science, Geographic Information Systems(GIS), Music, Study Skills, and Driver Education. I have worked in both public and private schools, and have also done Family Counseling and worked in Special Education. I ran a GED class for at risk teens for several years with a 100% success rate.
When I was not at school, I was busy raising six children and in my spare time I was active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and as an appraiser for Destination Imagination. I was also active with the school drama program. I also owned and operated a small recording studio, and performed with a local folk/folk-rock band.
Now that I am retired, and moved here to Florida, I miss working with students. So, here I am. I am looking forward to working with you. Hi. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my thirty years of working in education, I have had considerable experience working with special needs ( ADD/ADHD, Aspergers, etc.) students in both the public school and private school setting. In addition to teaching Math, I have worked as a one-on-one aide, an inclusion aide, and supervised both the middle school and high school resource rooms.
To foster the desired behavior, I try to make clear and specific requests and provide an abundance of positive feedback for accomplishing the desired result. I clearly outline consequence for undesired behavior & follow through. I try to individualize my approach to meet the specific needs of each student. Working together with the student, we develop a plan to utilize their strengths and to remain focused on their goal, so that they could master difficult or uncomfortable tasks.
During my almost 30 years of teaching I spent a number of years working in special education and dealing with special students.
During that time I had hundreds hours of training in dealing with special needs (ADD, ADHA, Aspergers, Autism, Dyslexia, etc.). I also had hours of training in creating and implementing alternative learning programs, as well as writing IEP's. I also worked for 5 years in a residential placement facility with children at risk, including abuse issues, substance abuse, and both mental and physical handicaps.
Besides having a teacher certification in mathematics and another in driver education, I also held a paraprofessional certification in special education and spent as interim resource room supervisor.
I have worked in education for the last thirty years. In that time I have had the pleasure of working with literally thousands of students. A large part of helping each student to achieve his or her goals was helping them develop good study skills. Developing good organizational and time management skills was a good start, but good study skills are a lot more than that. I would help each student to develop their own study skills by using various methods of obtaining, understanding, retaining, and being able to recall the subject matter when they needed it. By presenting them with a wide variety of methods, or “tricks”, to choose from they were able to identify what worked for them. The net result was higher self esteem, more self confidence, better grades, and higher test scores.
