My wife and I have recently retired and moved to a parcel of small acreage upon which we are growing blueberries and shitakke mushrooms as well as fruits & vegetables for ourselves. My wife and I have recently retired and moved to a parcel of small acreage upon which we are growing blueberries and shitakke mushrooms as well as fruits & vegetables for ourselves. The startup has been draining physically and financially, but we are at the point where we can sit back a bit and focus on more "outside" activities.

My qualifications as a tutor are varied & extensive: I earned a B.A. in Sociology from UMass, Amherst, MA many years ago. My minor was English literature & composition. During my tenure there, I served as a mentor in the Juvenile Justice Department for troubled youths. After graduation, I was a part of a team of counselors whose task was to socialize a very damaged young man who had been warehoused at Belchertown (MA) State School for the Retarded, as it was referred to back then. His court-ordered program was designed to attempt to "undo" damage that was done to him by his lifelong incarceration. It was a lesson in frustration, as it was obvious that what we were attempting to do was virtually impossible. It reinforced in me how important empathy is when dealing and interacting with others in society, as well as the fact that you must attempt to change injustice whenever you see it.

Regarding my service to the young, I have proudly been an athletic coach, working both with my own children as well as their classmates to create a sense of accomplishment by teaching teamwork & cooperation in order to achieve goals. I worked at Hampshire College in Amherst as a counselor for student employees, most of whom were struggling to get through a very expensive institution with little help from parents and a limited scholarship.

My reward comes from watching my students "see the light", as it were, and the obvious sense of accomplishment when a challenging goal has been achieved. At my age, I have much to offer and plenty of patience. I welcome any opportunity.
