My husband always says teaching is in my blood when I tend to explain everything in the finest detail. I feel like I have been a tutor my whole life as I started tutoring younger students even in elementary school. The joy of seeing grades improve and self-esteems become rebuilt is the best motivation and reward for giving my best to each student.
I have tutored all ages from pre-K up to college level, and have taught an adult CPR & First Aid plus Child-care class once a month for 3 years. Each age group has its own challenges and reward, but personally I prefer young children because of their eagerness to learn and their capacity to embrace new methods of studying.
I always start with a quick assessment to determine where the student is at with the material and start from there. I believe in holistic teaching and will always include tending to my client's emotional well-being together with academic performance. Research confirms that positive affect leads to better academic outcomes.
My interest in all sciences stems from my many family members in scientific professions whose work has always fascinated me. Psychology has been my main focus of study and the Cognitive branch of Psychology specifically has influenced my teaching style by teaching me how the brain works and responds to stimuli. I love teaching this material as well as using the information while teaching other subjects.
I grew up bilingually and pay attention to language nuances in a different way than most people. I am always thrilled teaching English as a second language and seeing students' confidence in using the language soar. I understand the difficulties in trying to express concepts in a second language and focus on fluent communication in teaching English.
The bulk of my formal tutoring experience consists of teaching elementary aged children. I believe that there are countless of opportunities for children to either get "lost" or to find a solid foundation for their future academic success. I love making the difference in their lives and teaching them not only the subject matter, but study methods and life skills too. I graduated my Bachelors degree in Psychology and Education cum laude, including many electives on early childhood development
It is my privilege to transform my love of teaching to a love of learning in any student. Please contact me for any more information. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated cum laude from both a Bachelors and a postgraduate Honors Degree with Psychology as majors. I have also taught a college class of Introductory Psychology to nursing students.
