About Sarah

I've worked as a high school teacher for six years, where I taught a variety of math classes– as well as creative writing. (It's an unusual combination, but I like it very much!) I have endorsements in high school math, high school English, and special education (K – 12). I've also worked as a private teacher/tutor for families traveling abroad and for another family who needed to home school a recently adopted daughter.

I've taught math for six years, and have tutored it since 2003. I especially enjoy taking a difficult concept breaking it down. Over the years, I've developed many ways of approaching hard material, so I'm willing and able to explain something multiple ways until we find one that makes sense to a student. I'm familiar with the TI-83 (and up!) family of graphing calculators and can help a student with any questions about that.

I'm also a published author (Valiant, Egmont USA, 2015). If I'm helping someone with their writing, I will give honest feedback, but I'm never rude or cutting and will always point out strengths as well as weaknesses. I can help with everything from essays to short stories to college admission essays, but I am probably not the one if you need help with writing or editing poetry. (Writing about it? Yes! Simply writing it? No....)

As a tutor, I know that if students need tutoring, they are probably already feeling stressed out, so it's important they feel at ease as they work with me. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions as we dig into the work– and I'm confident we'll be able to find a way to help them understand the material.

Please feel free to contact me if you want to set up a time for us to meet!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
