I dedicated six years to teaching Kindergarten and first grade. I have also tutored children in third, fourth, and fifth grades for Florida standardized assessments. I currently work full time as a Training Supervisor for a large travel company. I train adult learners in everything from sales and technology to world geography.
One of the greatest moments in life is achieving something you've worked hard for. One of the greatest rewards working with students is witnessing that moment. I would like to work towards those moments will both students and parents. I believe that together, we can be a team. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
When the Common Core Standards were first introduce, they began in Kindergarten. The literacy standards were introduced first, my second year teaching, followed by math in year two. So, you see, I have been teaching Common Core since it was first introduced to the state of Florida. I was on the committee that liaisoned between my school and the school board as it rolled out.
I hold a valid Florida Professional license. I spent 6 years teaching in an Elementary setting, grades K-1. During that time, I spent three separate years tutoring after school for grades 3, 4, and 5 in both reading and math.
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I spent 6 years teaching phonics in Kindergarten and First Grade. I have taught using the Common Core Standards for Language Arts which include a foundation in phonics and its counterpart phonemic awareness. Most recently, I taught using Reader's Workshop developed out of Columbia University's teaching program which integrates phonics in mini lessons as well as read alouds and other components of the reading block.
