Florida Southern College (Math)
I tutored throughout my high school years, both for the school and independently. I concentrated on math, science, and English, while tutoring for the school. This included teens ages 13 to 18. During these four years, I reinforced and retaught core classes such as Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Spanish I-III, Biology, English I-IV, and Geography. For the honors/advanced placement students, I helped them get further ahead of their classes by introducing new topics in their textbooks.
Similarly, I privately tutored middle school students in all core classes (including religion, where applicable). The biggest complaint among students was that their teacher didn't explain things "right" or that the information was "too much". I addressed these concerns by breaking down information into manageable sections. Also, I encouraged students to go through their textbooks and rewrite the main points in ways they can understand.
My style of tutoring is not based on memorization of facts, although that does play a part in learning concepts. Learning is more of trying to understand concepts and applying them in ways students can grasp and relate to them. Ultimately, this strategy helps students learn more. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing flute for 10 years and can cover the flute's entire range from low C to 3 octaves above at C#. Sight reading; major, minor, and blues scales; articulation; dynamics; and styles/tempos of a variety of pieces is included. Also, I am familiar with techniques to improve posture, breathing, and overall playing ability.
I am a native Spanish speaker and am proficient in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Furthermore, I effectively communicate with friends, family, and co-workers in Spanish on a daily basis. I have three years of Spanish education. This includes basic skills such as learning the alphabet and verb conjugation.
I have 5 years experience in learning about different study skills and applying them in the education and corporate environment. This experience has resulted in my leading courses and sessions that teach students how to better adapt to demanding classes through different aspects of study skills. I guide students into finding a comfortable and effective way to learn and develop study skills they can apply in any class.
One aspect of study skills is note taking that students develop. Students can establish an organization system for their notes by using Roman numerals, letters, or differentiating colors. Encouraging note taking during class further enhances the student's ability to pick out main points and recall that information.
