About Katie

There’s a story that resonates deeply with me, that of the boy and the starfish. Every starfish he encounters, that’s beached, he tosses them back into the water. As a man approaches and tells him that he can’t possibly make a difference because of the thousands of starfish that are beached that simply throwing one back in does not matter. The boy bent down threw one more in and stated that he made a difference to that one. Most people get into public service to make a difference and to have an impact, to at least have an influence on somebody. After graduating from my undergraduate institution in 2010 I started in the AmeriCorps Coach Across America program, an amazing program that I was fortunate enough to be a member with. I partnered with SOS Outreach, a non-profit dedicated to teaching youth core values while incorporating a sports curriculum. I created the South Florida branch of the non-profit teaching 150 youth over a year, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding while focusing on respect, honor, determination, and other values. In my year there I offered program days while recruiting and training 20+ volunteers to work as positive influences. I worked with youth from the Upward Bound programs, Take Stock in Children, a group home for teen boys in foster care to name a few. My year of service led me to my next position. I started with a non-profit where I have been for the last three years. As an agency we work with youth 18-25 who have “aged out” of foster care from Palm Beach County, Florida. We foster independent living skills in youth so that they are ready to be self-sufficient adults; they are not learning these skills otherwise because of their lack of permanency and not having a positive adult connection. I have the opportunity to develop curriculum and teach students in an innovative way.

I've been extremely lucky in this position; in the time that I've been here I've personally been able to work with 200+ youths, and I've been to my fair share of high school graduations. Within my organization I have held many positions. From working with youth 16-18 to prepare for life after foster care to being promoted to manage four others who work with youth 16-18 and our previous AmeriCorps member who acted as a college coach at the local state college. The college coaching program is similar to that of my own AmeriCorps experience; a new, innovative program that needs a spark to light the way. To moving to the OASIS Center, a drop back in center for homeless youth from foster care or the community who do not have any resources. I get the opportunity to help youth create a plan to become self-sufficient and become stable. While being able to grant write in order to expand our programs, run the continuous quality improvement committee to ensure we are offering the best services to these young adults, and working with Vocational Rehabilitation to help prepare youth to work. Working in these positions pushed me to earn my Masters in Public Administration. I am accustomed to working with youth of all ages from 18-25 and designing training that best suits the individuals needs. No one is exactly alike and should not be treated that way.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

For the past three years I have been working with youth 16-25 in helping them be prepared for college. From completing applications, financial aid forms, and all other necessary documentation in order for the young adults to become successful. I also managed a college coaching program at Palm Beach State College and the staff involved in that program.

Logic

While receiving my Bachelor's of Arts in Philosophy a core section of the major was logic while teaching and practicing it. I would assist with making study guides and practice examples for students.

Political Science

I earned my Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy. I also have my Master's of Public Administration, as well.
