I have been a successful math/SAT tutor for over 25 years in education-oriented Northern Virginia. I've learned that most students really are more able to understand their math than they themselves believe. I encourage them to think through problems on their own, assisting with my academic and emotional support to boost their self-confidence. While agreeing with my students that math can be a challenge, teaching them how to problem solve will show them the life-long benefits of critical thinking.
I have a B.S. in Physics and an M.S. in Operations Research. I have many outstanding evaluations from students and their parents which I would be happy to share upon request. After several tutoring sessions, I can say that Alan is one of the best tutors I've ever met. My daughter had to take the SAT and the Algebra 2 EOC, so she needed help urgently. Alan was the right person to help her overcome both challenges. First of all, he has an extensive knowledge of Mathematics, loves this subject and is able to teach it effectively. He uses different strategies to help students grasp difficult concepts and he makes them feel confident in their math abilities. In addition to that, Alan is always punctual, patient and reliable. I am glad to recommend him as a tutor.
He is very patient and makes precalculus, difficult material, easy to understand. He is always on time. Excellent Math Tutor!!! Highly recommended!!!
I needed a tutor quickly for my daughter who was having a big Calculus test and couldn't afford to fail it. Alan took on the challenge and was very patient with her. She passed the test the very next day. Great job!!
Mr. Alan B. is a knowledgeable math tutor. He has been tutoring my son for a while now with the SAT. He is very professional, always on time and most important very patient with his students regardless of their level.
Alan was very nice and patient but he didn't seem to know what he was talking about. He taught me one thing on a worksheet then when we went to a different one he totally contradicted himself and said something completely different. I had to correct him several times and I'm a student that isn't very good with Calculus at all.
Lynda was having difficulty understanding how to find relative maxima and minima points given graphs of a function and it's derivative. I carefully went over the criteria for finding these points several times, but she kept going off the topic and made it difficult to explain the concept. I'm sorry she felt I didn't make it clear to her, but I never 'contradicted' myself or needed her to correct me.
Alan is an excellent teacher he is patient, punctual, and accommodating. I feel comfortable with him. I'll give him 5 stars.
Very friendly and patient. Taught me so much in just one hour, he is a great tutor and I would highly recommend him.
Adjusted to my needs very well and puts it in a way that anyone can understand. Very patient and teaches just at the right pace.
Alan has done a great job with my HS age son, helping him pass his precalculus class. We noticed immediate positive results. Al is very friendly and easy to reach by phone. I certainly recommend his services.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
