About Gina

Serving DeLand (Tuesdays and Fridays) and Lake Mary/Longwood/Maitland (Mondays and Wednesdays)--currently nearly at capacity, and new students are always coming on board--please check with me for availability.

I am a subject matter expert in reading and writing, as well as a tutor with an 18-year track record of turning students around--many very quickly.

Student grades depend on student effort and where the student begins, but some recent marks of my students include A's on college papers, 100% on an IB poetry assignment (up from an 80 average), and A's on elementary reading and writing tests.

Not only do my students improve their grades; they also learn how to learn. My goal is that they will eventually no longer need my help.

My approach is hands-on and eclectic; rather than lecturing, I prefer to discover each student's strengths and interests. From there, we build a cycle of success and shore up weaknesses.

I have successfully tutored for 18 years in grades K-12, as well as adults. In particular, I enjoy working with students who have been labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic, dyspraxic, or told they have learning disabilities. Many times, those who have not been progressing with the school's method will make good progress with the methods that I use. These methods include hands-on techniques that use various senses to help the student get the information.

I also teach conversational ESL classes to students with some English background. My ESL experience includes teaching conversational English by internet phone to students overseas.

With a B.A. in English Literature, I've also been a writer and editor for military contractors. Another of my jobs was to edit curriculum and books for a major specialty publisher.

Outside of tutoring, I am an artist with gallery representation, and I sell vintage furniture and home goods in an online shop.

I started tutoring with a remedial English teaching assistantship while at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. My children were dyslexic and had other learning struggles, so I understand students' and parents' challenges. Under the mentorship of a pioneering reading specialist, I home schooled them, learning to write custom curriculum with a holistic approach to learning (hands-on, reaching all of the senses). One of our sons--who had struggled a great deal--went on to get a master's degree at a highly respected university. Afterward, I tutored for Volusia County Public Schools and individual clients.

From a writing method used by Ben Franklin, to newer methods developed to teach adults to read, I use creative avenues to reach my students. Besides one-on-one time, every student gets personal lesson plans geared to his or her interests, abilities, and learning style. It's easier to learn something we like, so we use materials that appeal to each student and play games when appropriate.

My students usually progress more quickly than they would with traditional teaching methods. However, every student is different, and a few simply need a lot of repetition.

I offer online tutoring by video conference because it can be extremely convenient for both sides. Some families don't live near a tutor with the particular expertise they need, but online access makes it possible. For parents, there is no driving to another location, no last-minute straightening of the house, no concern about a stranger in the home, and less inconvenience to other family members than with another person in the home. Other family activities can continue a little more smoothly than they might otherwise. Also, there are probably fewer cancellations on either side, because tutoring can continue in poor weather or when either student, parent, or teacher has a cold or other minor health issue.

My test prep credentials include being a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist a year early (I took the PSAT in 10th grade) and scoring in the 99th and 97th percentiles on the English-related sections of the SAT.

Please note that I have passed the Wyzant background check and take appropriate safety precautions with all students. For minors, I meet in a public location or in a home with an adult over 18 present in the home. Much as I might like to do so, I can't hold a session otherwise, nor can I provide transportation for students. Also, I will need prior notice for a person other than the parent who initially signed up for lessons to pick up a minor.

Guests are welcome to attend lessons for $10 per hour, at my discretion. (Parents sit in anytime at no charge, of course.)

All of the following are included in the rate, in addition to the actual lesson time: travel expenses (or internet setup), basic supplies and worksheets, lesson preparation and plans, reports, and parent conferences. I provide a brief written overview of the material covered for each lesson afterward: parents who want more detail may call or ask in person after the lesson.

My students and I often use supplies and books the student already has, but there may be times when I request that the student purchase certain items or books.

I always enjoy discussing solutions with students or parents, and I respond quickly to messages. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have taught Bible at the high school level for 4 years as well as personally reading and studying the Bible with reference books for about 28 years.

Drawing

I am a professional artist with fine art gallery representation. In college, I took general art, drawing, and art history classes. Private lessons in drawing, pastels, and oils with Mary Ann Kephart, M.F.A., took me to a level where I was winning best-in-show awards. Currently, I have been studying with Florida Highwayman artist R. L. Lewis, as opportunity has allowed.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to teach Elementary (K-6th) because I have 11 years of experience tutoring virtually all subjects at this level. My experience and training include lesson planning, record keeping, and curriculum development. I have also edited elementary curriculum for a major specialty publisher. A B.A. in English Literature, which included a teaching assistantship, rounds out my qualifications.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native speaker of English who teaches conversational English (ESL) to overseas students online. I am a subject matter expert in English, having been a writer and book editor, with a bachelor's degree in English. I have 18 years of tutoring experience. My experience includes special training in keeping ESL student interest online.

Handwriting

I taught handwriting for 9 years. Usually, I use several methods to teach the student. These might include copying from samples or taking dictation. For older students, I sometimes have them practice good form in order to gain speed.

Phonics

I am qualified to teach phonics because I have 12 years of experience tutoring this subject under the guidance of a reading specialist. I spent extra time on the subject with students who struggled with it and have developed games and other strategies to maintain interest. I have also used phonics to teach spelling. A B.A. in English Literature, which included a teaching assistantship, rounds out my qualifications.

Public Speaking

In school, I participated in numerous 4-H public speaking events, winning several blue ribbons. I got an A in a high school public speaking class. I have given successful speeches to executives in the business world. I have coached students on developing an engaging speech, making notes, practice, and delivery.

SAT Reading

I have been teaching reading and writing for 18 years--one of my specialties. I am a Subject-matter expert outside the academic world, also. I'm a book editor for a publisher and writer for a high-tech engineering firm. I scored extremely well on the SAT, in the 99th percentile on the actual test. I have kept up with the changes on the test and am able to coach students on testing strategies and building skills.

SAT Writing

I am a subject-matter expert in reading and writing in the real world, as well as a tutor with 18 years of experience.

I was a National Merit Semi-Finalist a year early (took the PSAT test in 10th grade).

I took the SAT in 1982 and scored in the 99th percentile on the Verbal section (now Reading and section) and 97th percentile on the Test of Standard Written English (now the Writing section).

As a professional writer and editor for 15 years, with a B.A. in English Literature, I have the skills and practical understanding of the English language and essay-writing skills to help students improve their scores.

I don't just follow a test prep book. My approach is different for each student, depending on his or her abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. I especially enjoy helping students who struggle with the subject matter or with taking tests.

Social Studies

Social studies was always one of my favorite school subjects, so I enjoyed tutoring grades 1-12 in the subject for 15 years. I like to put everything presented into context for the student rather than offer dry facts. I often incorporate interesting narratives or books into the curriculum to make social studies come to life.

Study Skills

As a tutor of home schooled students for 15 years, it was my job to organize the students' entire setup for education. This included setting schedules, making a study area, and seeing that it all happened daily in spite of home interruptions. In the course of tutoring other students, I have found that setting up and following a study plan that accounts for their family lives, schedules, abilities, and inclinations makes all the difference between success and failure. I particularly enjoy seeing students improve in this area, as they begin to enjoy success and gain hope for the future.

Writing

I am a subject matter expert in writing. I was a professional writer and book editor for many years. My clients included high-tech engineering customers, a major specialty book publisher, and small businesses. My bachelor's degree is in English Literature; I love teaching writing and have taught it at every grade level through college. My students tell me I've helped them put down their thoughts effectively. Students' recent college-level writing grades include 100%, 100%, and 94%.
