About Matt

As a historian, my primary obligation is to provide students with a foundation of knowledge about history and historical studies. In doing so I seek to provide students with an understanding of how knowledge and intellectual interpretation are important aspects for accomplishing their life’s goals.

One of the elements of effective teaching is to challenge students to think critically about issues, develop sound arguments, reflect upon and assess the validity of their arguments, and apply the classroom material to their world. I believe this process is especially important in the teaching of history. Imparting an understanding of the past gives students a better understanding of the present and allows them to make informed contributions to shaping the world around them. In order to guide students through this learning process, an instructor must effectively communicate and demonstrate a sense of confidence with the subject matter. I firmly believe that effective teaching comes from having one’s clear sense of identity as a scholar. I am committed to using historical scholarship in the classroom to engage students in meaningful discussion about classroom material. Teaching, research, and service, are three distinct, yet interdependent, areas of the teaching profession that shape who we are as members of the academy. I believe that the classroom is the place to make a difference in students’ lives, offering them our own learning through our scholarship and service.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
