B.A. James Madison University (magna cum laude) (Elementary Studies)
James Madison University (Master's)
I recently graduated summa cum laude with my Master's Degree in Elementary Education from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I have experience teaching in grades ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade and teaching a variety of different subjects. My favorite subjects to teach are reading, writing, math, and music! However, I am proficient in all elementary subjects and have abilities to plan and implement excellent lessons in any subject matter. I also worked as a summer camp supervisor for two summers, planning games, activities, STEM lessons, and team-building activities for large groups of children ages 5 to 10! I planned and led these games with my group while also maintaining positive behavior management strategies and good communication with my camp counselors.
Outside of my love for teaching, I also have a passion for music performance! I performed in my university's color guard and marching band in many parades and televised performances. Some of my performances include performing in the 2015 New Year's Day Parade for Pope Francis in Rome, Italy and in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City in 2014! I love sharing my passion for music and performance with my students. I believe it is important to share your passions with others and follow your dreams! I am very grateful to be able to teach and follow my passion for music in my every day life!
I have taught a variety of math topics in many different levels. I have experience teaching in math using manipulatives, visuals, and other different tools to break down complex math concepts into simpler ideas for young children. I use these teaching strategies to develop a concrete understanding about abstract math concepts.
I have experience teaching phonetic understanding, phonic practice, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and writing and grammar skills. I have taught reading at all levels, including primer, emergent, and transitional readers.
Along with teaching reading and math, I have also taught science and social studies subjects at the elementary school levels. I have experience planning and implementing hands-on and minds-on lessons about these subjects, including using technology and kinesthetic activities to help the students grasp the subject ideas.
I am very passionate about education and I encourage all of my students to be life-long learners! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
