About Melissa

I am a Certified English 6-12 teacher, trying to expand my teaching opportunities by tutoring individuals with a great wish of learning something new in every session. I have been teaching for the past 5 years with heterogeneous group ranging from 15-30 students in the same environment. I've had the opportunity to teach students that want to learn English as part of their personal transition to living in USA. Teaching them various skills like reading, writing, speaking and listening. This was what I wanted to do since my early years in College.

Started my career in Puerto Rico by tutoring whole groups of 20 students (or more) with the goal of raising their grades and preparing them for a successful rest of their school semester or school year. After two successful semesters of tutoring, I applied for a Job for a teaching position in Puerto Rico. Stayed with the same Department for 4 years (Department of Education of Puerto Rico). I believe that teaching a single individual is more productive than teaching whole groups of students. It gives the tutor the opportunity to give a one on one education with each student you teach.

For the past 5 years Ive been teaching different ages ESL and ESOL classes. This year, how ever, I was give the opportunity of teaching ELA in a middles school in Kissimmee.

I would love to help students learn a new language or just get better grades in school. I have different availability hours. This week Ill be available after 5 every day till Friday. From June 13-23 Ill be available after 2:00pm and after that until August 1st, Ill be available all the time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I currently teach in a middle school. The course I teach is English Language Arts, to 7th and 8th Graders. Most of them come from different speaking communities which helps me maintain focused as to how I should help them.

ESL/ESOL

After graduating college with a Bachelors Degree in ESL, I worked for 4 years as an English teacher in Puerto Rico. I moved to the states a little less than a year ago and immediately was employed by the Osceola County, to be a Certified ELA (English Language Arts) teacher and am currently taking my Endorsement courses for ESOL. I have experience in Lesson Planning and love working to reach a common Goal with students, for them to learn a new Language.

Reading

As part of the English curriculum we have to also practice reading on the daily basis with our students. In order for them to continue raising their Lexile Level. It takes constant practice when it come to reading so being patient while teaching or tutoring any one who is trying to upgrade their reading skills. Practice makes perfect!
