About Eric

Greatings,

I am former educator, who is originally from San Diego, CA. After two years of experience with at risk students, I moved forward with my education and earned my second master's degree in order to specialize the research of English Language Arts. Currently, I am working on a novel and several short stories, which will be published in the near future. Currently, my focus is to tutor full time and assist students on an individual basis in order to help them meet their full potential.

My educator experience stems from Lake County, Broward County, and Osceola County, and Casa Grande in Arizona. After working with at risk students, I realize that one on one contact with students is the best method for teaching. For this reason, I am now focusing on creative writing and other one on one opportunities that come up.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me any time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Using the latest techniques taught to me by my mentor for the General Knowledge Test of the FTCE examinations, I will do everything I can to assist your student in the manner that is needed. Every student deserves to succeed. Due to this, I believe that numerous strategies to make English curriculum fun and understandable are necessary. For this reason, I believe using different methods such as converting classical literature to modern music and ideas. I also draw from ideas that are included in the text of the English Journal, Urban Education Journal and much more. This creates a well rounded method of critical and creative reading that will remove the anxiety of the ACT.

American History

My specialty in my undergraduate degree is New Historicism and its analysis of the cultural and political influences that are tied to each literary piece. In order to do this, it is necessary for me to be well informed about history, its changes and the results of different events.

Aspergers

With the support of the ESE program at the University of Central Florida, I am able to bridge my specialty toward students with Aspergers. I will be able to introduce them to ways of reading and writing that fit their interest and complement their obsessions in order to support them in their learning and development.

ASVAB

As a former member of the US Army, I understand the frustration of the ASVAB. However, it is easier than you think. In fact, there is no such thing as "pass" or "fail" in the ASVAB. In fact, I received an ASVAB score of 79 with GT score 116. This is not due to my intelligence level. Instead, there are techniques I use in order to assess the question and deliver an outstanding performance. Now, it is my obligation to assist students who desire the same.

Bible Studies

As a specialist in Jewish and Christian literature from the ancient world to early Medieval time, I am able to assist students with the concept of Biblical concepts, exegesis, and practical application.

Elementary (K-6th)

My extensive experience with elementary (k-6) students is grounded in my travels overseas. Due to my practice with students in South America, along with the language barrier, I was forced to become creative in my methods toward education. On top of that, the University of Central Florida has trained me in current teaching techniques that assist students to bridge the gap between what they know and what they need to learn.

English

My specialty in reading and writing is the preparation of students for classical concepts such as Greek and Roman mythology. Thus, I believe it is pertinent to assist students by addressing them with concepts they are familiar with. This causes the generational gap to close and a bridge to form. For this reason, I teach reading and writing from young adult novels and the most up to date strategies such as the book "Jump Write In" from the writer's corps.

Phonics

As a Master's in Teaching student, I was commanded by the University of Central Florida to learn how to handle phonics through phonemes and morphemes. The class was call "applied linguistics." Thus, I am certified through the University of Central Florida to address phonic awareness. Another reason I find phonics to be highly valuable is due to phonics being the method my parents used to teach me how to read. Now I am able to teach the concept systematically.

Public Speaking

With over ten years of experience speaking in front of groups of native English speakers and those with minimal English I am to assist you with designing speeches, prepare for interviews along with the proper rhetoric for each situation. Public speaking is a lot more than just telling people what you want them to believe. I have experience overseas with speaking to businessmen and women in public settings. Also, I was involved with building the logistical concept of Bagram Airbase where I was responsible for giving tours to generals and other field officers. Thus, I know public speaking as an art and a science.

Reading

As an upcoming student in English Language Arts education, I am able to alleviate the the anxiety of standardized testing. The reason is due to the method of creating a game out of reading. In order to foster critical reading, I ground reading in creative concepts. Thus, I attempt to get to know the interest of the student and address these interests in order to bridge the gap of reading and comprehension. The reason why I do this is because I firmly believe every student deserves a chance in improving their methods through a positive and friendly environment.

Religion

I specialized in the areas of Christian and Jewish literature and philosophy. In particular, I read the writings of Augustine and Ambrose, along with Jewish theologians as well. This has enriched my knowledge of religious cause and effect in the Middle East.

SAT Reading

SAT reading can be an anxiety driven event. However, it doesn't have to be. Instead of teaching the load and cram method, I desire to teach a method of using games, satire and parody. This allows the mind to grasp the material through personal connections. Thus, I attempt to use the text of the SAT through chunking in order to address its material through a step by step basis through parody and satirical methods. Doing this allows the child learn through artistic methods instead of dry and nonsensical methods.

Study Skills

When I was an undergraduate, I struggled numerous times with the concept of study skills. However, I was taught these concepts through the University of Central Florida's Writing Center. There they taught me the how every strategy is different. Also, when I was in the class that dealt with reading comprehension for elementary to high school, I noticed that "Comprehension Going Forward" was an amazing book that taught the very concepts of study skills, strategies and the methods to make them practical.

Writing

Writing begins with a passion that must be cultivated through fear being eliminated. Thus, it is my belief that writing should be taught through games and other activities. The reason is due to creative thinking being grounded in creative thinking. For this reason, I desire to teach writing by allowing students and parents to incorporate non-traditional elements such as creating a Facebook formatted project about a character they are interacting with - along with other ideas. This allows the student to connect with writing through questioning different aspects of their life, authors, etc.
