I am a credentialed Language Arts teacher. My area of study focused on literacy and education which granted me the chance to study how people interact with new information, acquire new skills, and value the kind of learning they are being asked to undertake. I have worked as a tutor for students ranging from elementary through adult in subjects ranging from basic math and reading skills to ACT and SAT test preparation. Tutoring is such a unique opportunity to apply what I know about teaching and learning in the most effective way. I enjoy helping a student gain confidence, knowledge, and efficacy in any subject. Each student learns a little differently and I enjoy finding out how to best facilitate learning for the individual student and to help him or her achieve the learning goals desired. I learn how to best help a student by listening to and observing the student. Each student teaches me how to be the teacher he or she needs.

I attended George Washington University in D.C. and California State University of Chico. While at GWU, I studied international affairs, German, and eastern European literature. As I mentioned, I studied language and literacy at CSUChico. I taught high school English in northern California for 3 years. I also speak Portuguese. I acquired that while I was an exchange student in Brazil for a year through the Rotary Club's program for high school students. I have traveled quite a bit and enjoy experiencing new cultures and environments. My interests also include environmental sciences, macro-biology, hiking, camping, and agriculture. I have always studied and enjoyed interacting with nature. My mother was a biologist and I have a good amount of knowledge about biology ranging from soil science to specific flora and fauna.

I am a credentialed teacher and one of the main concepts I learned through education and experience is that each individual has a different learning modality. The particular regime of studying and note-taking will vary depending on whether a student is a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. I can help a student find what works best for their type of learning and design a plan for note-taking and studying.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

The SAT reading section now consists of more evidenced based questions. This shift has actually made this section a bit more manageable now that there is less inference and deduction. I teach students how to make a map of the passages during their first read through, use the question to determine what information to specifically locate to inform their own answer for the question before looking to the answer choices. This improves accuracy and time management skills. The type of reading and comprehension needed for this test demands that all answers be supported by specific textual evidence and that is what I teach my students to do.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

The SAT writing section focuses on grammar and conventions in the English language. It also focuses on being clear and concise. I help students compile a list of conventions and errors to look out for. I also help them learn how to prepare and examine the structure of a text in order to effectively evaluate and discuss its organization.

I have been tutoring students in SAT math for 5 years now. I know the types of problems the test uses and have a number of strategies to help my student maximize their time and energy where they can be most effective. I tutor many high school students in Algebra I and II and trigonometry and geometry, so I have the knowledge base and experience to deliver instruction in these subjects.

ACT Math

The ACT math section is a majority of Algebra and Geometry. These are the areas that students need to be most proficient in. There is also much work to be done with becoming familiar with the format of the problems and strategies for the different types of problems. I have much experience with ACT math (and all sections of the ACT for that matter). I know I can help any student become more confident and increase his or her accuracy with the test.

Kind and patient.

Quick response and easy to deal with. My high school son really enjoyed his precalculus lesson and felt he accomplished a lot in 1 session. We plan on using her again. We recommend her.

Great follow-up and excellent relation with my son.

Madeline provides great details on each session content. It helps me to follow up on my son's progress. Even with 90 minutes sessions, he is not reluctant to add them to his busy homework load.

Highly Recommended!

Since March 2017, Madeline has helped my son on English literature, writing and reading comprehension when he was still in 8th grade. All the tutoring sessions were conducted online. Before meeting Madeline, I was not so sure about online tutoring. We live in a greater Houston area. The logical approach was to find a face to face tutoring service at the beginning. However, after having a brief discussion with Madeline before the first tutoring session, I decided to give online tutoring a try. It turns out online tutoring is a great way to have individual lessons. Online tutoring at least have two major advantages in comparing to face to face tutoring: 1) No driving is required. That means the student can be at home without parents driving to a mutual convenience location for lessons. 2) One can find more available and suitable tutors online than one can find in local area. Most importantly, I believe Madeline is the right teacher regardless if she may be a thousand miles away. Madeline is very compassionate, patient, empathetic and friendly in her teaching. I highly recommend her! During Hurricane Harvey, the regular school had to shut down for two weeks due to safety and accessibility. During those two weeks, my son had multiple lessons from Madeline. Learning never stops during those difficult time. We appreciate Madeline’s support and encouragement during the difficult and uncertainty time.
