About Adriana

I have a Bachelor's degree in Science and Technology. More specifically, my major was in Biology and my minor was in math. I also have 24 credits in Education including a course in Nature and Needs of the Exceptional Child. During my 12 years teaching I have taught Science and Math to students from K to 12th grades.

Tutoring has been a passion of mine even before I became a teacher. Since high school I have been organizing study groups and helping people learn. I have tutored Math, Spanish, Handwriting (print and cursive), and Science. My last job in Puerto Rico was Tutoring under Title 1 funding.

My goal is to help my students reach the next level. Thus, I have experience teaching and tutoring Elementary Math, Pre- Algebra and Algebra 1 including K,1st and 2nd grade Common Core Math.

My first language is Spanish. I have experience tutoring Reading and Writing in Spanish. With a positive attitude and commitment your child can go from "below" to "on level" in no time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

I have 27 college credits in Exceptional Student Education, including the following courses: Nature and Needs of the Exceptional Child, Observation and Screening of Learning Disabilities, and Teaching Methods in Elementary School.

With the help of different gadgets and techniques I correct student's pencil grip.

I use play dough, sponges and clothespins with students to exercise fine motor and tripod grip.

I teach students to write from top to bottom, left to right and adequate grip both in print and cursive.

Study Skills

I have 3 college credits in Student Life. In this course I learned how to develop educational skills such as reading, listening, critical thinking, and test-taking. I also developed personal success skills such as time and stress management. I teach my students these skills.

When I teach and tutor I always promote a growth mindset and explain to my students how the brain has the ability to learn new things as long as we challenge it.

The attitude a student has towards himself, the subject and the teacher will influence his desire and availability to learn, so I provide an environment of trust, confidence and encouragement.
